This is the new Porsche Cayenne Electric, and it’s a monstrous SUV with over 1,150hp and a 0-62mph time to scare supercars. Here’s everything you need to know about it.

  • Up to 398 miles of range
  • Clever new wireless charging tech
  • Largest interior screens of any Porsche model
  • On sale now with prices starting from £83,200

Porsche is quickly expanding its range of electric cars. It started with the Taycan back in 2019, then it introduced the Macan Electric last year and now there’s this: the new Cayenne Electric.

This is Porsche’s largest EV to date, and it wades into battle against high-end models such as the Lotus Eletre, Mercedes EQS SUV and the BMW iX M70. To fight off this stiff competition, the Porsche has 1,156hp, 398 miles of range and a raft of new technology to make it as fun to drive as a Porsche should be.

You can order the new Cayenne Electric now, with prices starting from £83,200. Don’t fancy going electric just yet? Well don’t panic because the existing petrol and plug-in hybrid versions aren’t going anywhere.

New Porsche Cayenne Electric motors and performance

When you buy a Porsche, you probably expect blistering performance. Well the Cayenne Electric certainly offers that.

The standard version has 408hp in normal operation, and this goes up to 442hp when you activate launch control. This means it’ll do 0-62mph in 4.8 seconds, so it’s no slouch.

But it seems glacial compared to the Turbo model, because that car has 857hp in normal driving, rising to 1,156hp when launch control is engaged. The Turbo will do 0-62mph in just 2.5 seconds, which is exactly the same as the bonkers Porsche 911 Turbo S.

It’s no good having all this power if it all falls apart in the corners, so the Cayenne has plenty of clever suspension tech to make it feel as agile as a Porsche should. You get active air suspension as standard which can make minute adjustments on the fly to iron out bumps and counteract bodyroll, and the Turbo also gets a clever torque vectoring system which can send power to the wheel with the most grip.

All Cayenne Electric models also get rear-wheel steering which makes the car more agile and manoeuvrable at low speeds, as well as more stable on the motorway.

New Porsche Cayenne Electric batteries, range and charging

The new Porsche Cayenne Electric features an all-new 113kWh battery back, and in the standard car this can deliver up to 398 miles of range according to official tests. That’s around 25 miles more than an entry-level Lotus Eletre.

The range drops to 387 miles for the more powerful Turbo version, which isn’t a massive penalty considering how much faster it is. Go for the most powerful Eletre and you’ll only get up to 310 miles of range.

You won’t be hanging around at chargers for hours either thanks to the 800-volt electrical system. The Cayenne Electric can charge at up to 390kW DC, meaning you can go from 10-80% in just 16 minutes. That’s barely enough time to grab a coffee at a service station.

Porsche has also introduced a revolutionary new charging technology to the Cayenne, and that’s wireless charging. Not for your phone, for the car.

You can have the inductive charging plate on your garage floor at home, then all you have to do is park over it and the car will charge at up to 11kW. That’s quick enough to get a full charge overnight, all without any faffing with cables.

New Porsche Cayenne Electric interior and infotainment

Porsche actually unveiled the new Cayenne Electric’s interior back in September, and it’s a bit of a screen fest.

It’s actually the largest screen area of any Porsche interior, and it comprises three different displays. There’s a 14.3-inch digital instrument cluster, along with a huge, curved infotainment system in the middle. Add in the optional 14.9-inch passenger screen and you’ve completed the trifecta.

Then there’s the augmented-reality head-up display, which visually represents an area of 87 inches 10 metres in front of the car, projecting things onto the road such as navigation directions, speed limits and upcoming hazards.

Despite all of this space-aged tech, you do still get some physical buttons to control things like fan speed, temperature and volume – something most people will be happy to see because buttons are easier to use on the move than screens.

New Porsche Cayenne Electric design

It may look pretty similar to the current Porsche Cayenne, but this electric version has actually been completely redesigned.

Starting up front you have slimmer headlights than the petrol version, and there’s no gaping grille either. You do have some intakes to the side which channel air around the front wheels, as well as an active grille lower down to cool the battery.

The design changes at the rear are slightly more substantial. The Cayenne Electric has a slightly less sloped rear end, and the light bar is a tad more intricate as well. But generally speaking, it looks very similar to the petrol versions.

New Porsche Cayenne Electric: when can I buy one?

The new Porsche Cayenne Electric is available to order now, and first deliveries are expected early next year.

Prices start from £83,200 for the standard car, making it slightly less expensive than the Lotus Eletre and around £50,000 less than a Mercedes EQS SUV.

If you fancy the faster Turbo model that’ll set you back a hefty £130,900, making it pretty much exactly the same price as the equivalent Lotus Eletre. As with most Porsche models, you’ll probably be able to add many thousands more to the price once you leaf through the options list.
