Discover how the Toyota RAV4 has evolved over its six generations, from its debut in 1994 to the latest model revealed in May.

The Toyota RAV4 was born in 1994 to offer buyers something which performed well off-road, but was also good to drive on the tarmac. This model effectively kick-started the compact SUV segment, blending a raised body with optional all-wheel drive and dinky dimensions.

Since then, it has evolved through six generations, each one bigger and more high-tech than the last. Here’s how each generation contributed to its journey.

First Generation (1994–2000): The Birth of an Icon

The first RAV4 launched as a three-door, but was later joined by a five-door version. It was built on its own unique chassis using parts from the Carina and Corolla, came with front- or all-wheel drive, and a 2.0-litre petrol engine. It was something of a revolution at the time, no one else had built anything quite like it, though its equipment and refinement were very basic by today’s standards.

Second Generation (2000–2006): The SUV Grows in Size

Toyota completely redesigned the RAV4 for 2000, increasing its size and boosting quality and refinement. The three- and five-door formats remained, and this generation introduced diesel engines, a key move for the European market. The model still leaned towards on-road use, with more comfortable suspension and revised steering.

Third Generation (2006–2012): A farewell to three doors

The RAV4 grew significantly and ditched the three-door option. It added new tech like stability control, and for the first time, a third row of seats was available in some markets. Both petrol and diesel engines featured in the range, and the car gained weight. The design remained familiar but was softened slightly compared to the rugged first and second generations.

Fourth Generation (2013–2018): A family-friendly SUV

Toyota introduced a more aggressive design, with elements taken from the Auris of the time. Diesel engines were still available, although this was the first RAV4 to be offered with a hybrid engine. This generation saw upgrades in equipment and connectivity, though some critics lamented a perceived loss in ruggedness compared to earlier models.

Fifth Generation (2019–2025): The Hybrid Era Begins

In 2019 the RAV4 became more efficient and spacious. Diesel engines were dropped in favour of hybrid and later plug-in hybrid options. The design became more angular, but it didn’t have quite the same off-road appeal that the first RAV4 did.

Sixth Generation (2026–): The next RAV4

Set to hit the showrooms in 2026, the next RAV4 features a completely refreshed exterior which recaptures some of the rugged spirit of the first generation. It’ll be offered as a hybrid or a plug-in hybrid, although we’ll only see the latter in the UK.
