For over 50 years, the Volkswagen Golf has been a spacious, well-made, comfortable and economical hatchback which suits everyone from bachelors to families of four, and the latest car is better than ever.
I’ve reviewed the eighth-generation Golf, and I love just how simple it is. There are also some great leasing deals on this car at the moment which make it look even more tempting.

Volkswagen Golf lease deals: £240 per month is crazy value for money
I’ve found a deal which could see you behind the wheel of a new Volkswagen Golf for just £240 per month. This is over three years and 24,000 miles, with an upfront payment of £3,200.
This is for the R-Line version, meaning you get larger alloy wheels, a more aggressive-looking bodykit, sports seats, a heated steering wheel and adaptive cruise control.
By comparison, a Vauxhall Astra will cost you around £370 per month to lease on similar terms. There are a few reasons I’d choose the Volkswagen beyond the price.
Three good things about the Volkswagen Golf
1. The interior is really well-made
One of the Golf’s main selling points is the solid interior, and the latest car feels suitably posh. An update in 2024 brought more plush materials and some upgraded switchgear to boost that premium feeling, and it certainly feels nicer inside than the Vauxhall.
2. It’s really comfortable to drive
If you’re after a car which soothes your brow on a long commute, the Golf is a great choice. It’s just so easy to drive, with light, precise controls and suspension which soaks up all the bumps nicely. It’s quiet on the motorway as well, and the adaptive cruise control takes the strain out of long journeys.
3. There are plenty of engine options
Unless you’re after an electric car, there’s a Golf to suit everyone. You can get a frugal 1.5-litre petrol engine, a plug-in hybrid which does up to 88 miles on electric power alone or there are the GTI and R performance versions with powerful 2.0-litre engines.
Three annoying things about the Volkswagen Golf
As good as it is, the Volkswagen Golf isn’t perfect. Here are three annoying things.
1. The styling is a bit dull
The Golf isn’t the most exciting hatchback on the market. A Peugeot 308 will turn more heads, and the Vauxhall Astra is more stylish as well. It’s still handsome enough though, and the R-Line’s extra trinkets do liven things up a bit.
2. Practicality is only average
The Volkswagen Golf is spacious enough in the back, and the 381-litre boot is an okay size, but the Honda Civic offers more carrying capacity and the similarly-priced Skoda Octavia is palatial by comparison.
3. Touchscreen controls
You get a large touchscreen as standard in the Golf, and while it’s pretty easy to use I don’t like the fact you have to operate all the climate controls through it. You use fiddly touch sliders to change the temperature, whereas the Vauxhall Astra has proper buttons.
