BMW has just announced a new, cheaper version of the new iX3 electric SUV with 395 miles of range and a price tag of just over £53,000. Here’s everything you need to know.

The BMW iX3 has only been on sale for a few weeks, but a new entry-level model has just been revealed. It’s called the 40, and it’s a rear-wheel drive version with 320hp and up to 395 miles of range.

First deliveries of this new variant will start in summer this year, and it’s priced within spitting distance of a top-spec Tesla Model Y.

New BMW iX3 40 price

The new BMW iX3 40 starts from £53,520, making it just over £5,000 cheaper than the next model up. This significantly closes the gap between the iX3 and a comparable Tesla Model Y Premium, although the Tesla is still £4,500 less expensive.

You get most of the same tech as the next model up, meaning the iX3 40 still has the Panoramic iDrive infotainment system with a full-width display at the base of the windscreen. The main changes come under the skin.

New BMW iX3 40 batteries, motors and performance

The iX3 40 has a smaller battery than the next model up, and it’s a motor down as well. You now get an 82kWh battery, down from 108kWh, and a single motor powering the rear wheels.

The result is up to 395 miles of range. That may be some way off the headline-grabbing 500-mile figure offered by the standard car, but it’s still impressive. A Tesla Model Y Premium Long-Range Rear-Wheel-Drive will do 378 miles on a charge, while an Audi Q6 e-tron with the same-sized battery will do around 330 miles.

The iX3 40 has 320hp, down from 469hp in the dual-motor car, and 0-62mph takes 5.9 seconds. The Rear-Wheel Drive Model Y is slightly quicker, but both cars will feel more than brisk enough.

Charging speed on this entry-level version is slightly lower, topping out at 300kW as opposed to 400kW. The smaller battery means you can still go from 10-80% in 21 minutes, which is exactly the same as the range-topper.

Should you buy the new BMW iX3 40?

The BMW iX3 is a hugely impressive SUV which is fantastic to drive and packed with ground-breaking tech, and this entry-level version shouldn’t be any different. We’ll need to get behind the wheel before we can deliver a full verdict, but the signs are promising.

If you don’t need the 500 miles of range offered by the dual-motor version, and you’re not bothered by the reduction in power, the iX3 40 could be a really good way to get into this brilliant electric SUV for less cash.
