Mat’s Car of the Day: the BMW X7 shows why it’s important to shop around for the best deal
Car changing is a big deal
It can be all too easy to just wander into a dealership and pay the asking price for your next car, but shopping around can save you tens of thousands of pounds in the case of the BMW X7.
The BMW X7 is one of my favourite luxury SUVs, but it can cost £100,000 with options. That puts it out of reach for many buyers, but if you’re in the fortunate position to treat yourself and your family to something like this, there are some great discounts to be had.

BMW X7 prices and deals: how to get the best price
If I was buying a BMW X7, I’d go for a M Sport model with the 3.0-litre diesel engine. Directly from BMW, this will set you back £97,420. On a PCP deal at 4.9% APR, that works out to £1,175 per month over three years and 30,000 miles, with a £9,000 deposit and a £48,000 optional final payment to keep the car.
Leasing looks far more tempting by comparison. You can get this very same X7 for £707 per month over the same time and mileage, with a deposit of £8,838. That works out to £33,600 over three years, compared to almost £60,000 on a PCP deal if you hand the car back.
So it’s a no-brainer, right? You’d lease the car. Not so fast on that one.
Right now through Carwow, you can save almost £18,500 on an X7 M Sport with the diesel engine, bringing the price down to £78,930. On the same PCP deal, this will cost you around £650 per month, totalling £32,000 over three years.
So it’s slightly cheaper than leasing, and you have the option to pay the £48,000 final payment to keep your car, refinance it, trade it in for a new one or just hand it back. When you lease a car, you have to give it back.
And that’s why it’s super-important to compare the latest deals before you buy your next car – it could save you a lot of money.
Three reasons I love the BMW X7
The BMW X7 is a brilliant car, and here are three reasons why I love it.
1. The interior is sublime
The BMW X7 feels far posher inside than a Mercedes GLS, and I reckon it’s more premium than the new Audi Q9 as well. There’s not a single cheap-feeling trim piece in here, and all the switchgear feels solid. The central touchscreen is also responsive, easy to use and packed with features.
2. There’s genuine space for seven people
Many seven-seaters have a third row which is only really suitable for kids, but the X7 can comfortably fit seven adults for a long journey. It’s roomier than the GLS, but the Mercedes does have a slightly bigger boot.
3. It’s lovely to drive
No other luxury SUV drives as well as the X7 on a twisty road. It feels far more agile than its gargantuan size would suggest, but it’s still comfortable over long distances. A Range Rover may be a bit more relaxing, but if you like having fun through the bends then the X7 is a no-brainer.
Three annoying things about the BMW X7
As good as it is, the BMW X7 isn’t perfect. Here are three annoying things to consider before buying one.
1. The looks are polarising
It’s certainly imposing, but you’d never call the BMW X7 a pretty car. The massive grilles and fussy front bumper just don’t look as clean or regal as a Range Rover, and the Mercedes GLS looks a bit more classy – if not as in-your-face.
2. It’s not the easiest to drive in town
If you spend most of your time on urban streets, you might want to look at something smaller than the X7. Its sheer size makes it tricky to thread through tight gaps, and the optional rear-wheel steering is a must-have for improving manoeuvrability.
3. Lack of physical buttons
An update in 2023 removed the neat row of climate control switches and moved them onto the central screen. They do at least live at the bottom of the display in an easily-accessible bar, but they’re still fiddly to use on the move.
