Chery Tiggo 9 vs Omoda 9: similar on paper, but which should you buy?
November 05, 2025 by Jamie Edkins
You may have noticed Omoda and Jaecoo dealerships popping up near you, and now a third brand is joining the franchise. Chery is a car-making giant which also owns Omoda and Jaecoo, and now it’s starting selling cars as a standalone brand.
It’s already launched the Chery Tiggo 7 and the excellent Tiggo 8, which our own Mat Watson awarded a prestigious “buy it” verdict in his video review, and now there’s the Tiggo 9.
The new Chery Tiggo 9 is a big, luxurious SUV with a whopping 428hp from its plug-in hybrid engine. It also costs less than £45,000 making it a bit of a bargain.
The thing is, if you walk into a dealership you may see the new Tiggo 9 parked alongside an Omoda 9 in the showroom, and that’s another large, posh plug-in hybrid with 450hp and a very similar price tag.
So which one should you buy? Well both have their merits, so we’re going to compare the two side-by-side to help you decide.
Remember, you can buy a brand new or used car right here on Carwow. And you can sell your car, too. We’re here to help you through every step of your car-changing journey.
Chery Tiggo 9 vs Omoda 9: design
Design is one of the biggest factors separating these two cars, because if you want a sporty-looking SUV then the Omoda 9 is definitely the better choice.

It has a coupe-esque sloping roofline, a bold and imposing front bumper and sleek LED lights. The quad tailpipes, while fake (boo), do give a nod to the blistering performance. You get a pretty large roof spoiler as well – it’s quite a smart-looking thing.
The Chery Tiggo 9 isn’t bad-looking by comparison – it’s just different. It has a more posh and classy vibe to it. If the Omoda is like an Audi Q8, the Chery is more akin to the taller and more boxy Q7.

There is a clear Audi influence at the front of the car with that massive grille, but on the whole the Chery’s design is a touch generic. It does have a premium look to it with the full-width light bar and large alloy wheels though – it’s ideal if you’re after something which looks a lot more expensive than it really is.
Chery Tiggo 9 vs Omoda 9: interior and practicality
In terms of interior design, the Chery Tiggo 9 and Omoda 9 are pretty similar. Both have a high centre console which separates you from your passenger, making them feel more sporty to sit in.

We haven’t had a look around the Chery in person yet – first cars are coming to the UK in December. However, given that this sits above the uber-posh Tiggo 8 you can expect the interior quality to be excellent.
We have spent some time in the Omoda 9, and that car’s interior is lovely. The sweeping dash design looks good, the material quality is excellent and the switchgear is all really nicely damped.

You get twin 12.3-inch screens in the Omoda, whereas the Chery has a 15.6-inch infotainment system and a slightly smaller digital driver’s display.

Space in the back of the Omoda 9 is good, with plenty of kneeroom and headroom for even the lankiest of teenagers. While we’ve not sat in the Chery yet, the smaller Tiggo 8 is more spacious in the back than the Omoda 9, so you can expect this new Tiggo 9 to be almost limousine-like.
The Chery also has another trick up its sleeve – a third row of seats. If you need to carry more than five people in the car, you’ll have to go for the Chery Tiggo 9.

The same goes if you carry loads of stuff in the boot, because the Chery has a bigger load capacity. You get 819 litres of space in the Tiggo 9, versus 660 litres in the Omoda 9.
Chery Tiggo 9 vs Omoda 9: engines and performance
Both the Chery Tiggo 9 and the Omoda 9 are only available with one engine option – and it’s a 1.5-litre plug-in hybrid system with two electric motors. The power figures are slightly different though.

The Omoda 9 has 449hp, and it can do 0-60mph in 4.9 seconds. Mat Watson managed to get pretty close to this when he tested the car, with his specialist timing gear showing 5.0 seconds. The Chery has 428hp and a claimed 0-60mph time of 5.4 seconds, and Mat will be sure to test this when he drives the car.
Almost as impressive as the power is the plug-in hybrid range, because both of these cars can do over 90 miles on electric power alone according to official tests. The Omoda also returned around 50mpg in its intelligent hybrid mode when we had the car, and the Tiggo 9 should be able to do roughly the same.
Chery Tiggo 9 vs Omoda 9: price and standard equipment
The Omoda 9 starts from £44,990, and you can save an average of around £2,300 through Carwow at the time of writing. The Chery Tiggo 9 costs £43,105, and while it’s currently too new for there to be any discounts available you can still keep an eye on our Chery deals page for the latest savings.

Both cars are also only available in one trim level, and there are no optional extras. You simply pick your colour, and everything else comes as standard. It’s a great buying experience for customers, and one which some European brands can learn from. We’re looking at you BMW.
The Tiggo 9 comes with heated, cooled and massaging front seats, heated and cooled rear seats, adaptive cruise control, a power tailgate and a surround-view camera system as standard. For less than £45,000, that’s a seriously impressive kit list.
The Omoda 9 is also very well specced. You get heated and cooled seats in the front and the rear, a surround-view camera, adaptive cruise control and a power tailgate. Massaging seats are missing on this car, but it’s still great value for money.
Chery Tiggo 9 vs Omoda 9 verdict: which one should you buy?
If you’re after a sporty-looking SUV with loads of power and a lovely interior, the Omoda 9 is the better buy here. However, the Chery Tiggo 9 is slightly less expensive, larger, more practical and ever so slightly better equipped.
We haven’t had a chance to drive the Tiggo 9 yet, but if it’s anything like the Tiggo 8 then it’ll be pretty inoffensive, if not all that exciting. If you’re after a seven-seater SUV which looks far more premium than the price tag suggests, then the Tiggo 9 is certainly one to watch.
