Car changing is a big deal
‘Hands-off, eyes on’ driving will be available on the Ford Puma, Puma Gen-E, Kuga and Ranger PHEV pick-up from next spring.
BlueCruise technology is one of the most advanced semi-autonomous driving systems available. Unlike similar driver aids which only work if the driver keeps their hands on the wheel, Ford’s BlueCruise allows hands-free driving. However, the feature is only approved for use on certain roads.
Ford reckons its global customers have driven 552 million miles using BlueCruise, and from spring 2026 it will be offered on more models. So far in the UK it has only been available on the Mustang-E.
BlueCruise was the first ‘hands-off’ driver aid to gain regulatory approval back in 2023.
To use BlueCruise in their cars, Ford customers will need to specify the Driver Assistance Pack and pay an additional subscription, the cost of which has not been confirmed for the new models. The current subscription price for Ford Mustang-E owners is £17.99 per month.

What is BlueCruise?
Ford’s BlueCruise is a ‘hands-off, eyes on’ semi-autonomous driving aid. BlueCruise builds on Ford’s Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control (IACC), and helps control the steering, acceleration, braking, and lane positioning while keeping a safe distance from the vehicle ahead. It monitors road markings, speed signs and traffic conditions, operating in stop-start traffic all the way up to motorway speeds.

It’s the ‘hands-off’ part that makes BlueCruise different from systems like Volvo’s Pilot Assist. These require the driver to keep their hands on the wheel and will warn the driver if they take their hands away. With BlueCruise, drivers don’t need to hold the wheel, provided they are on a road where this is allowed.
Ford describes this as ‘hands-off, eyes on’ driving because the driver is still responsible for the car and should be paying attention, ready to take back control when required. It’s not intended to allow drivers to read a book or send emails, as they still need to supervise the technology. It’s a semi-autonomous rather than fully autonomous system.
Which new cars are fitted with BlueCruise?
At the moment, it’s just the Mustang-E. From spring 2026, BlueCruise will be rolled out across these other models too.
Ford Puma

The Puma is Ford’s most popular car in Britain. It’s fun to drive, well equipped, and has a big boot.
Ford Puma Gen-E

If you like the sound of the Puma, the Gen-E is the electric version. It’s one of a handful of cars to qualify for the maximum £3,750 Electric Car Grant.
Ford Kuga

Maybe you need a bit more space from your BlueCruise-equipped car. Well, the Kuga is roomier than the Puma with decent infotainment and an enjoyable drive.
Ford Ranger PHEV

The plug-in hybrid version of the Ranger pick-up is economical to run so long as you can recharge often. The hybrid running gear barely eats into the load bed at all.
Can BlueCruise be used in the UK?
Yes, BlueCruise can be used in the UK, but the hands-off function is restricted to certain areas. Ford calls these stretches of road Blue Zones.
Some 95% of the country’s motorway network is included, so there’s a good chance any long journey you undertake will have sections that can be driven hands-off. In total, there are 84,226 miles of Blue Zones across Europe.
