Jaguar F-Type Convertible Review & Prices

The Jaguar F-Type Convertible stands out for two reasons: its head-turning looks and bone-rattling V8. There are more practical open-tops, with better infotainment, though

Is the Jaguar F-Type Convertible a good car?

Buying a Jaguar F-Type Coupe is a bit like going to see your favourite band wearing ear defenders. Why block out that fabulous sound with a solid roof? Well, that’s where the Jaguar F-Type Convertible comes in.

Yep, press a button, and in 12 seconds you’ll have the wind in your hair and exhaust note in your eardrums. Of course, you can also do this in a Porsche 911 Cabriolet or an Aston Martin Vantage Roadster.

But while those models should be around a little while longer, 2023 is the last year the F-Type will be on sale. To mark the occasion, Jaguar has given it some very subtle updates, such as bigger alloy wheels as standard and some black badges, as well as a special '75' trim level that celebrates 75 years of Jaguar sports cars.

It's actually quite a good thing that Jaguar hasn't seen fit to change much, because the F-Type is one of the best-looking cars on sale today. Up front there are slim headlights that flank the wide grille, while round the back you get LED lights and trim-specific exhaust designs. With the roof down, the F-Type looks even more elegant.

Inside, there hasn't been much of an overhaul over the years. The F-Type Convertible still can’t rival Porsche in terms of quality but it still feels pretty special inside. The 10.0-inch widescreen infotainment system is clear enough but isn't the most up to date or user-friendly. It's responsive, but there are easier touchscreen systems to navigate through and the built-in sat-nav is better ignored in favour of your smartphone navigation app via the car’s standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Outside, the F-Type Convertible looks brilliant, but the interior is starting to feel its age – at least the Convertible gets you closer to that gorgeous V8

Unlike the Porsche 911 Cabriolet, which has a couple of small seats in the rear, the Jaguar F-Type Convertible is a strict two-seater. That said, the space for two adults is very good, but don’t expect to have much space to take along luggage.

There are three petrol engines to choose from, with a 300hp four-cylinder opening the range, and two V8s sitting above it with power outputs of 450hp or 575hp if you go for the R model.

The price gap between 2.0-litre and 5.0-litre cars is substantial, but then, so is the performance. The four-cylinder feels smooth at a cruise but spritely when accelerating, whereas the V8 models feel outright blistering when pushed hard.

The R is the most raucous, and the most agile thanks to its sportier set-up, but the fact is, a Porsche 911’s more precise steering and more predictable handling will appeal to keen drivers more. Still, both V8 models can be specced with four-wheel-drive, so grip isn’t an issue and the F-Type Convertible does steer well, although there’s no manual gearbox.

Subtle changes for its final year have done little to change the F-Type recipe. It still looks superb, sounds fantastic and is comfortable yet fun enough to excite the majority. Interior style, infotainment and accessories

The Jaguar F-Type Convertible’s cabin is good quality and roomy enough for two, but don’t expect this facelifted model to have had a drastic makeover inside

Jaguar hasn’t given the F-Type Convertible much attention inside with its facelift, so it’s all starting to feel a little dated compared with the latest Porsche 911 and Aston Martin Vantage.

That said, there’s nothing overtly wrong with the Jag’s interior. There’s plenty of leather, piano black plastics and chrome trim inlays, plus everything feels very well screwed together. It just doesn’t look or feel as modern as the Porsche.

There’s the choice to change the colour of the F-Type Convertible’s leather seats, headlining, and trim inlays and if you go for the First Edition or range-topping R model you get more aggressive sports seats as standard.

The Jaguar F-Type Convertible has a new 10-inch widescreen infotainment system over the old model, although it isn’t actually the latest screen Jaguar has access to, which is a shame.

Sure, the screen is fairly high-res and responsive, but there are easier touchscreen systems to navigate menu-wise and the built-in sat-nav is better ignored in favour of your smartphone navigation app via the car’s standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

You’ll find a USB socket and a 12v connection in the cabin for charging your smartphone, but there isn’t even the option of wireless charging like there is in a 911 Cabriolet.

A punchy Meridian sound system comes as standard, but if you want an even more vivid experience, you can upgrade that to a Meridian Surround system which gets extra speakers for a richer sound.
