Mat’s Car of the Day: a used Lexus RX is a great alternative to the posh German SUVs

Mat Watson has found a cracking deal on a used Lexus RX – a Japanese luxury SUV with a great hybrid engine. Here’s why he thinks you should consider this car.
If you’re thinking of buying a posh SUV, you’re probably looking at something German. The BMW X5, Audi Q7 and Mercedes GLE are all great choices, but if you fancy something a bit different then I reckon you should check out a Lexus RX.

Lexus RX: why should you consider this car?
I spent a week with the Lexus RX, and there are lots of things I liked about it. Here are three reasons I think you should add this car to your shortlist.
1. It’s really comfy
Lexus knows how to make a comfy cruiser, and the RX is a great car for soaking up the motorway miles. It’s not sporty in any way, but it wafts down the road in a near-silence. It’s a relaxing way of getting from A to B.
2. The interior feels well-made
Another thing you’d expect from a Lexus is solid build quality, and the RX ticks this box as well. Everything feels like it’ll last forever, and the materials are all nice and plush as well. It’s not quite as luxurious as a BMW X5, but it feels nicer inside than a Mercedes GLE.
3. It’ll last forever
Being a car from the Toyota family, you can bet that the Lexus RX will serve your family for years with little-to-no fuss. It has a fantastic reputation for reliability, and you can get up to 10 years of warranty coverage by getting the car serviced on time within the Lexus dealer network.
Lexus RX used deals: how to get the best price
The Lexus RX starts from just over £65,000, which is £15,000 less than a Mercedes GLE. You can also save up to £9,000 on an RX through Carwow, but I reckon to get the best deal on this car then you have to look at the used market.
I found a 2023 Lexus RX 450h in top-spec Takumi trim for sale on Carwow for £45,400, and it’s only done 19,500 miles. This model would’ve cost over £77,000 when new, and it comes with:
- Heated and cooled front and rear seats
- Heated steering wheel
- Adaptive cruise control
- Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Surround-view camera system
All this can be yours for around the same price as a top-spec Kia Sportage, and it’ll still have seven years of warranty cover left if you get it serviced with Lexus.
Three annoying things about the Lexus RX
As nice as the Lexus RX is, it’s not perfect. Here are three annoying things about this car.
1. Fiddly infotainment system
The 14.0-inch touchscreen in this car may look impressive, but it’s not as easy to use as the system you get in a BMW X5. The menus are all a bit confusing, and it’s pretty laggy as well. At least there are some proper knobs to control the temperature.
2. The boot isn’t massive
Compared to some alternatives, the Lexus RX has a pretty small boot. It’ll hold 461 litres, compared to 680 litres in the Volvo XC90, 650 litres in the BMW X5 and 722 litres in the Audi Q7.
3. The engines don’t feel that premium
While the RX is nice and quiet when you’re cruising, the 2.5-litre hybrid engine doesn’t feel so refined when you’re pushing on. It’s pretty noisy under harsh acceleration, and it’s not a nice sound like you get in a six-cylinder BMW.
