Volvo is reviving an iconic model, but not as you may remember it

Car changing is a big deal
The new XC70 isn’t a jacked-up estate car like the old one, instead it’s a plug-in hybrid SUV with 125 miles of electric-only range.
- New Volvo XC70 revealed
- Plug-in hybrid SUV sits between the XC60 and XC90
- Design is similar to the all-electric EX90
- Up to 125 miles of electric range
- Only available in China for now
This is the new Volvo XC70. It’s been over nine years since that name was last used, however it’s not being revived on a chunky estate car – it’s another SUV. Boo.
Specifically, it’s a plug-in hybrid SUV which will only be available in China for the foreseeable future, although Volvo hasn’t ruled out bringing it to Europe.
New Volvo XC70 design
These darkened teaser images are your only look at the new Volvo XC70 for now, although there’s nothing here which is likely to shock you.

Up front you have a similar blanked-off grille to the all-electric Volvo EX90, although this car does have a larger air intake lower down seeing as there’s an engine under the bonnet to keep cool. The XC70 also has more of a sporty sloping roofline than other Volvo SUVs.

At the rear you have slim, vertical taillights which look like modernised versions of the ones you find on the Volvo XC90. In terms of size, it’ll come as no surprise to learn that this car sits between the XC90 and the XC60.
New Volvo XC70 plug-in hybrid system
Volvo hasn’t divulged exact details about the engine used in the new XC70, you’ll have to wait a couple of months for the full reveal to find out about power, but it has said how much electric range this plug-in hybrid system will offer.
The XC70 will be able to do up to 125 miles on electric power alone, which is around the same as the pure-electric Mazda MX-30 can manage. Combine this with a petrol engine and the XC70 should be capable of some serious mileage on a full battery and tank of fuel.
Sounds great, where do I sign?
Hold your horses on that one. The Volvo XC70 will only be available in China for the foreseeable future, with orders starting later this year. Volvo hasn’t ruled out bringing this car to Europe though, stating “Volvo cars is exploring potential additional markets at a later stage”.
