This is the new Mercedes-AMG XX. It’s a concept car which features loads of cutting edge motor and battery technology, most of which will end up in an all-electric replacement for the current Mercedes-AMG GT Four Door.

The AMG XX Concept is the most aerodynamic car Mercedes has ever made, even more so than the Formula 1-inspired AMG One – and it’s faster than that car as well.

New Mercedes-AMG XX Concept design

The Mercedes-AMG XX is certainly striking to look at. It has very slim headlights up front, and the grille is enormous. The way it slants backwards makes it look a bit like a shark, although not many sharks are found in this bright orange colour.

Down the side you get a combination of form and function. The carbon wheels are completely closed off for improved efficiency, unless the brakes need cooling in which case a small motor will open up some vents. The door mirrors are pretty tiny as well, and the side skirts are designed to channel along the side of the car.

At the rear you have a very low, sloping roofline and wide haunches. This car also doesn’t have a rear wing, instead it uses venturi tunnels. These are essentially like upside-down spoilers which use the airflow running underneath the car to suck it down onto the road.

There’s no rear window on this car either, and there’s a panel between the circular taillights which can display messages. You can’t customise your own to say rude things to the car behind you though. Instead it can do things like say goodbye when you walk away from the car.

New Mercedes-AMG XX Concept interior

There’s a lot going on inside the Mercedes-AMG XX, and there’s a serious motorsport vibe about it. That steering yoke is very similar to the one you’ll find in the AMG One, and the chequered flag ambient lighting looks cool as well.

The dashboard is also wrapped in a similar coating which AMG uses on its engines, and there’s a cross member running behind the dashboard which stiffens the car up.

Carbon fibre bucket seats are pretty commonplace in performance cars these days, but the ones in the AMG XX can be customised to your exact body shape using 3D printed foam panels.

The materials used inside are really high-tech as well. The seats are made from a biodegradable material which looks and feels like leather, but it’s actually protein-based. It’s the same story with the suede and the fabric door pulls.

New Mercedes-AMG XX Concept motors and performance

The Mercedes-AMG XX Concept is fitted with three electric motors with a combined power output of one megawatt. That sounds really cool, and it translates to 1,360hp in old money. The result of all this power is a 224mph top speed, 5mph faster than the AMG One.

Mercedes hasn’t given a 0-60mph time for this car, but based on the stats it should be the fastest-accelerating car the brand has ever made. The AMG XX is both lighter and more powerful than a Porsche Taycan Turbo GT with the Weissach pack, and that car will do 0-60mph in 2.2 seconds. This means the Mercedes may even break the 2.0-second barrier, and leave the mighty Tesla Model S Plaid quaking in its tyres.

The motors are clever, too. They’re called axial flux motors and, without wishing to get too technical, they’re smaller and lighter than traditional motors while also producing more power.

For context, the traditional motors in a Porsche Taycan can measure between 16 and 20cm wide, while the axial flux motors in the AMG XX are just 10cm across.

This car also has a clever sound generator on board which generates a similar noise to a petrol-powered car. There’s a sound bar under the rear bumper to mimic an exhaust note, but that’s not all.

You also get speakers in the headlights. These not only make noise at low speeds to warn pedestrians of your presence, they can also generate an induction sound to make it more engaging when driving fast.

New Mercedes-AMG XX Concept batteries and charging

The 0-60mph sprint isn’t the only thing this car should be able to do very quickly – it’ll have super-fast charging as well.

The AMG XX can charge at a massive 850kw DC, if you can find a station which supports it. That’s over four times more powerful than the latest Tesla Superchargers, and allows this car to go from 20-80% in just five minutes. That’s almost as fast as filling up with fuel.

This is made possible by special water-cooled cells in the battery – the same as the ones you get in the AMG One – which can quickly dissipate the extreme heat generated by a charger this powerful.

There’s no official figure for this car’s range, but we’d expect it to do around 300 miles on a charge.

New Mercedes-AMG XX Concept: when can I buy one?

The Mercedes-AMG XX Concept won’t go on sale exactly as you see it here, but it will inspire a production car at some point in the near future. It’ll be a replacement for the current AMG GT Four Door, and you can expect to see all of this concept car’s motor and battery tech on the production version.
