The new Mercedes-AMG GT Four Door Coupe ditches the V8 engine in favour of electric power. Mat Watson has taken a look around the car to see if this is the right move, or if AMG has lost the plot.

This is the new Mercedes-AMG GT Four Door Coupe, and it’s gone all-electric.

That’s right, you thought putting a four-cylinder engine in the new C63 upset the AMG fanboys, this car ditches internal combustion all together. It follows on from the AMG XX concept car, and it touts some seriously impressive stats.

I’ve been to have a look around this new electric AMG, and I’m going to tell you everything you need to know about it.

Remember, you can buy a brand new or used car right here on Carwow. And you can sell your car, too. We’re here to help you through every step of your car-changing journey.

New Mercedes-AMG GT Four Door Coupe motors and performance

Let’s start with the bit you’re all dying to know about – how much power does this thing make?

Well it has three electric motors, two on the rear axle and one on the front, and they put out a combined 1,169hp. Those motors are pretty clever as well. They’re called axial flux motors, and that basically means they are very thin and have a wide surface area, making them easier to cool.

It can do 0-60mph in just 2.4 seconds, which is less time than it takes me to say this car’s silly long name. It’s also a tenth of a second slower than a Porsche Taycan Turbo GT, but both cars can hit 124mph in an incredible 6.4 seconds.

But what if you miss that V8 soundtrack? Well Mercedes has you covered there. This car can simulate a V8 engine using the speakers, and the seats even vibrate as you “rev” the car. Like the Hyundai Ioniq 6 N, the AMG GT Four Door Coupe uses fake gear changes to add a layer of involvement.

New Mercedes-AMG GT Four Door Coupe interior and technology

I love the interior of this new Mercedes-AMG GT Four Door Coupe. The chunky sports steering wheel and bucket seats make it feel like you’re sitting in a car which means
business, and there’s lots of clever technology on board as well.

There are two massive screens angled towards the driver which are running Mercedes’ latest software. They’re both really easy to use and feature AMG-specific displays for things like lap times and setting up the active aero. More on that in a bit.

Then there’s a third screen in front of the passenger, which is bright and clear but looks like a bit of an afterthought. Other than that, I really like the carbon fibre centre console and the quilted leather on the doors.

It’s even practical, with loads of legroom in the back and individual rear sports seats to hold your passengers in place. The 415-litre boot is also big enough to fit one Brummie motoring journalist.

New Mercedes-AMG GT Four Door Coupe design and aerodynamics

The new AMG GT Four Door Coupe looks like a slightly toned-down version of the Mercedes-AMG XX concept car from last year, but it still looks totally wild.

That massive light-up grille gives it serious presence, and the roofline is actually lower than it was on the old AMG GT Four Door. The rear is also very distinctive, and I love the LED strip running around the taillights.

It’s not all style over substance either, because this car features some seriously clever active aero. It’s the first production car ever to feature an active venturi tunnel, so a segment of the car pops out from underneath to speed up airflow under the car and improve downforce.

To reduce drag you can spec it with the world’s first active rear diffuser, and there’s an adjustable rear wing.

Mat’s final verdict: has AMG made a huge mistake?

The new Mercedes-AMG GT Four Door Coupe will go on sale later this year, and it’ll cost from £120,000 rising to almost £200,000.

That’s a lot of money, but this is the first ever mainstream electric car which I am truly excited to get in and drive. On paper it’s hugely impressive, but I’ll have to get behind the wheel to see if it delivers proper AMG thrills in the real world.
