If you drive an electric car and dread the hassle of charging, searching for your next home just got a whole lot easier.

Zoopla, one of the UK’s biggest property websites, has launched new features that let you filter house listings by EV-friendly perks such as whether a home comes with its own charger or how close it is to the nearest public charging point.

The move comes as EV ownership keeps climbing, with around 1.55 million cars on our roads now fully electric. Despite that, only 1.6% on Zoopla currently mention EV charging – something that both carmakers and property experts say needs to change.

That’s why Zoopla has teamed up with Vauxhall, whose latest research shows 40% of UK drivers now see EV charging access as a key factor when choosing a new home.

Before we get into the nitty gritty, remember you can buy a brand new or used car right here on Carwow. And you can sell your car, too. We’re here to help you through every step of your car-changing journey.

What’s the EV search filter for?

Through a partnership with charging network Octopus Electroverse, Zoopla’s listing now shows nearby public charging points alongside the usual info such as schools and trains stations. You can also filter your search to only show homes with a charge already installed, which is handy whether you’re renting or buying.

Here’s a quick breakdown of all the EV-related features you can filter through the site:

  • Properties that already have a fitted EV charger, so there’s no need to wait for one to be installed.
  • Properties that are pre-wired for an EV charger, which is great if you want to install a charger yourself at a later date without the hassle of rewriting.
  • Properties that have a driveway as charging on the street isn’t exactly convenient, and in some cases, even allowed.
  • Properties that are near public charging points – these appear clearly on the map view, so you’re never far from a top-up.

How to use the EV filter

In an industry-first, new Zoopla functionality, in partnership with Vauxhall, allows buyers and renters to find the nearest on-street chargers to a property, and filter properties with home charging.

Zoopla’s new EV charging filter helps you spot properties that either have a charging point installed or are EV-ready, meaning they’re all set up for installation. You can also scroll down to the property’s description for the full lowdown on its EV-readiness.

You can also now view nearby public EV charging stations on the map on any property listing. This is ideal if you’re still mulling over an at-home setup or would like to keep your options open.

“We’re proud to be the first property website to offer consumers the ability to find the nearest on-street chargers to a property, and filter properties with home-charging,” said Zoopla’s COO, Rich Hayes. “By improving Zoopla’s search functionality, our aim is that we will empower more confident moving decisions, particularly for current and future EV owners.”

Will having a charger boost your home’s value?

Probably yes – though there are some quirks, according to EV charger provider Cord.

Some drivers are loyal to specific charging brands, so a built-in charger that doesn’t match their usual setup might not be ideal. But as charging tech becomes more standardised, that’s less of a concern. Most modern chargers now support handy features like off-peak energy use.

What really makes a difference, Cord says, is off-street parking. “We definitely see chargers as adding serious value to homes,” they said. “And in the near future, homes without chargers might be harder to let – just like ones without broadband are now.”

The impact of installing an EV charger at a property suggests it increases a home’s value by £3,000 to £5,000, according to research by the National Association of Property Buyers.

Homes near public chargers are increasingly attractive to buyers and renters too, especially as EV ownership rises. Access to reliable, convenient charging can be a big tick on someone’s wishlist, making your property more appealing if you ever decide to sell or let, according to Zoopla.

So, if you’re in the market for a new place and you’ve gone electric, or planning to, Zoopla’s latest update might help you find a home that keeps your wheels turning, and your battery full.
