Audi A1 Sportback (2015-2017) interior

With bits borrowed from the more expensive models in the Audi range the Sportback feels like a premium product – complete with expensive trim pieces, metal touch points and lots of squidgy plastics that used to be a rarity in this class.

Style

From behind the wheel, the extra quality over similarly sized cars is easy to see

The problem for the A1 is that the class has not stood still and – as it’s one of Audi’s oldest models – it’s starting to look dated next to cars such as the Mini hatchback, which is equally well built and a good deal funkier. That matter in a class predominantly appeals to younger buyers.

The A1 doesn't have the youthful appeal of a Mini three-door

Infotainment

From behind the wheel, the extra quality over similarly sized cars is easy to see

No matter which A1 you buy, sat-nav is a £1,495 option that comes as part of the Technology Pack. It’s operated via Audi’s familiar scroll-knob controller, which means it’s easy to use even on the move. Sadly, though, the sat-nav system itself is not the best – the 6.5-inch screen is small by modern standards and the graphics are way too pixelly.
