You also get loads of high-tech screens, which may not be ideal for using while driving, but they’re slick, smart and packed with useful features.

Cabin quality is generally pretty good, too, although some of the materials aren’t quite as solid as they look, but the engines are a bit of a highlight. You get a choice of petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid options, with front- and all-wheel-drive models available. We’d recommend the diesel, which offers plenty of power and lots of low-down grunt and ample power, as well as great motorway economy.

But regardless of which engine you pick, the A5 Avant will be a great car to drive. Comfortable, quiet and easy to drive, it’s great on a motorway slog, and it’s easy to drive around town. And on a twisty road, it’s more engaging than its predecessors, even if it isn’t quite as exciting as the equivalent BMW 3 Series. But it strikes a better balance between ride and handling than the BMW, so it’s arguably the better all-rounder.
