BMW i3 vs Mercedes C-Class Electric: two posh electric saloons, one clear winner?
April 26, 2026 by Jamie Edkins
It feels like we’ve entered a new generation with electric cars, because the BMW i3 and Mercedes C-Class Electric are two EVs which really move the game on in terms of technology and range.
The BMW vs Mercedes debate is one which has been raging on the internet for years, and it’ll continue for as long as the two brands exist. To try and settle the debate, I’m going to compare the new BMW i3 and Mercedes C-Class Electric on their interiors, technology, range, performance and designs to give you a clear idea of their strengths and weaknesses.
BMW i3 vs Mercedes C-Class Electric: interior and technology

Stepping into either of these two cars feels like you’re stepping into the future, because they both have ultra-modern cabins with groundbreaking new tech. I went to see the new i3 at the launch back in March 2026, and the interior blew me away. It shares most of its tech with the BMW iX3 SUV, and it can be quite a lot to take in at first.
You get a massive central touchscreen which is oddly cantered over to one side. It’s a controversial design choice, but I happen to quite like it. This is paired with the “Panoramic iDrive” head-up display, which is a huge screen projected at the base of the windscreen running the entire width of the car.

I’ve not been able to test the system in the i3 just yet, but I have had a go with it in the iX3. The screen in that car is crisp and responsive, and the menus are pretty easy to use as well. That panoramic display is also great for keeping all your vital driving information in your direct eyeline, however there is a tad too much stuff on it. I don’t often need to know my elevation above sea level, for example.
Moving into the C-Class, Mercedes has taken a slightly simpler, but equally impressive approach. It has a 39.1-inch “Hyperscreen” which almost spans the entire dashboard; that’s pretty much the same size as my TV at home.

Deputy reviews editor Tom Wiltshire spent a day poking around the C-Class Electric, and he was impressed with how easy the system is to use. Having such a massive expanse of screen in front of you could seem daunting at first, but it’s actually quite intuitive.
For me though, the BMW wins on the interior front. The full-width iDrive system is, in my opinion, neater and more innovative than the cliff face of screen you get in the Mercedes, and it allows for a more interesting dashboard design as well.
BMW i3 vs Mercedes C-Class Electric: batteries, range and performance
From launch, the Mercedes C-Class Electric will be available with one motor and battery combination. It’ll be a twin-motor setup with 480hp, which is good for 0-62mph in 4.0 seconds.

BMW hasn’t given a 0-62mph time for the i3 yet, but it’ll get twin electric motors with a total of 469hp. You can therefore expect it to be slightly slower than the Mercedes.

But the i3 trumps the C-Class on range. It can go up to 560 miles on a charge, courtesy of a 108kWh battery pack. The Mercedes gets 473 miles from its 97kWh battery, although a rear-wheel drive version is expected at a later date with closer to 500 miles of range.

The BMW wins on the charging front as well, because it can top up at 400kW from a DC fast charger. It’ll add 250 miles of range in 10 minutes, 50 miles more than the Mercedes will give you in the same time.
BMW i3 vs Mercedes C-Class Electric: my expert verdict
So which of these cars wins on paper? Well the BMW has more range, faster charging and, in my opinion, the nicer interior of the two. I’ve left design out of the decision-making process here, beauty is in the eye of the beholder after all, but I do also think the BMW is far better-looking than the Mercedes.

But styling aside, I have to give the win to the new BMW i3. The Mercedes C-Class Electric may be slightly faster, and it has an excellent infotainment system, but the i3’s 560 miles of range is hard to ignore.
The next test will be getting these two cars out on the road to see how they drive, and to check out their practicality. We’ll be doing that as soon as they hit UK shores, and only then can we decide an overall winner.
