Opinion: Stansted Airport’s new drop-off fees are absolutely ridiculous
March 20, 2026 by Siobhan Doyle
The drop-off fee outside the terminal at London Stansted Airport has jumped to £28 for just 15-30 minutes. Consumer writer Siobhan Doyle says it’s not just frustrating – it’s downright ridiculous.
Just when you thought airport travel couldn’t get any more soul-crushing, London Stansted has decided to follow Heathrow and Gatwick in turning drivers into cash cows – financially and physically – for the sake of a few extra pounds.
At Stansted, you’ll now pay £28 to drop someone off outside the terminal for 15-30 minutes. Even shorter stops aren’t spared, with charges rising from £7 to £10 for under 15 minutes. And let’s not pretend this is “modest”: Heathrow’s fees rose from £6 to £7 in January – a 40% jump in a year.
And if you think that’s the worst, think again. Heathrow enforces a brutal 10-minute window. Miss it, and you’re staring at £80 – halved only if you cough it up within two weeks. Oh, and forget to pay the £7 online on time? Another £80. It’s like airport authorities are running a high-stakes game where the loser is always the passenger.
Stansted’s timing is perfect, too – right as the Easter getaway hits. Thousands of Brits will be flying, many on budget carriers like Ryanair, already stretched by baggage fees, seats, and ticket costs. Now, add another £10-£28 for simply saying goodbye, and suddenly “budget travel” feels like daylight robbery. Hell, I’ve found that a quick round-trip to Milan costs about the same as a 15 to 30-minute drop-off at Stansted!

I’ve seen it firsthand. I drop my mum off at Heathrow regularly for her trips to the Philippines. Blue Badge holders get exemptions, fine. But what about everyone else juggling luggage, kids, or mobility needs? These rules ignore reality. Terminal chaos is normal. My dad and I once spent over an hour stuck in Heathrow’s Terminal 3 drop-off area – would that mean risking £80 for a delay beyond our control? Absolutely absurd.
Frequent flyers, families, first-timers – they’re all at risk too. One slip, one slow-moving queue, one forgotten online payment, and suddenly you’re being punished for simply being human.

Airports claim it’s about congestion. Really? Or is it about padding their coffers while making passengers miserable? Because that’s exactly how it feels.
At this point, it’s not just inconvenient – it’s insulting. Travellers are already hemorrhaging money on tickets, baggage, parking, and overpriced snacks. Now saying goodbye at the terminal feels unnecessarily costly.
If airports want loyalty, efficiency, or even a shred of goodwill, this isn’t the way. Right now, they’re making travel harder, costlier, and far more stressful – all in the name of a few extra quid. I’ll be thinking twice before asking anyone for a lift ever again. And honestly, shouldn’t we all?
