Fuel prices about to soar – here are some tips to drive efficiently and save money

March 02, 2026 by

Fuel prices could rise soon amid Middle East tensions. Here are some tips on how to drive efficiently and save on fuel.

Drivers in the UK could be about to feel the pinch as growing tensions in the Middle East push up global oil prices.

The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway between Oman and Iran, is a key route for about 15 million barrels of oil a day – roughly a third of the world’s supply, according to Jorge Leon at energy intelligence firm Rystad Energy.

Recent military clashes involving Israel, the US, and Iran have disrupted oil shipments. Brent crude has jumped to $82 a barrel (£63) as a result.

Forecourt prices are already rising. Petrol went up by a penny a litre in February and is expected to rise again soon, according to RAC’s head of policy, Simon Williams.

He says that if oil stays at certain levels, drivers can expect the following average petrol prices:

  • $80 a barrel (£63) → around 136p per litre
  • $90 a barrel (£71) → over 140p per litre
  • $100 a barrel (£79) → nearly 150p per litre

With prices likely to keep climbing if tensions continue, smart driving isn’t just better for the environment – it’s a simple way to save money. Here are nine expert-backed tips to get more miles from every litre and cut your fuel costs.

Nine ways to save fuel and cut costs

1. Drive smoothly

Aggressive acceleration and heavy braking waste fuel. Try to accelerate gently, maintain a steady speed, and anticipate traffic so you can coast when possible. Using cruise control on motorways can help too.

2. Check your tyres

Underinflated tyres make your engine work harder. Keep tyres properly inflated as this will improve fuel efficiency and keep you safer on the road.

3. Lighten the load

Extra weight and roof racks increase fuel consumption. Remove unnecessary items from your car and only use roof boxes when needed.

4. Plan your trips ahead

Combining errands into one trip reduces mileage and avoids short journeys where engines run inefficiently. Use sat nav apps to pick the quickest route and avoid traffic jams.

5. Switch off when stopped

Idling wastes fuel. If you’re waiting more than a minute, turn off your engine instead of leaving it running.

6. Keep your car well-maintained

Regular servicing, clean air filters, and timely oil changes keep your engine running efficiently. A well-maintained car uses less fuel and lasts longer.

7. Consider alternative options

Walking, cycling, or public transport for short trips can save fuel and money. Even car-sharing or ride-sharing helps cut costs.

8. Use air conditioning wisely

Air conditioning can increase fuel consumption, especially at low speeds. Use it sparingly, and open windows at slower speeds instead.

9. Consider an electric or hybrid car

If you’re in the market for a new vehicle, an electric or hybrid car can dramatically reduce running costs. Even short-term savings on petrol can add up quickly over months of commuting.
