In contrast to the lofty connotations of its name, the Altitude trim marks the entry point in the Jeep Compass range. As standard, it gets 18-inch alloy wheels and heated wing mirrors shrouded in glossy black mirror caps, while on the inside there are cloth and faux-leather-trimmed seats, a 10.1-inch infotainment screen and a digital instrument display. Highlights on the convenience tech front include a reversing camera, adaptive cruise control and keyless start and entry.

Opt for a Jeep Compass in Summit spec, and in addition to the features from the Altitude spec you’ll get leather upholstery, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, front and rear parking sensors and ventilated front seats. Cosmetic touches like larger 19-inch alloys, rear privacy glass and a two-tone roof help Summit models stand out over Altitude cars, too. This is also the top-of-the-range trim if you decide to go for a front-wheel drive Jeep Compass - there are two more trims available for the all-wheel drive plug-in hybrid version.

Boiled down to the basics, the Overland trim takes the entry-level Altitude spec and wraps it up in a more off-road-oriented package. Both trims share the same in-car tech, but the Overland has a raised ride height for better ground clearance over uneven terrain, and rolls on tyres that are a little bit more suited to off-road driving than the ones on the Altitude and Summit trims.

Trailhawk models are the ones to pick if you fancy taking your Compass off road. They come with beefy towing hooks, raised suspension, underbody protection, hill-descent control and a special mode for the gearbox to help it climb over rocks and deal with steep inclines. You even get 17-inch off-road wheels with mud and snow tyres. All-weather easy to clean floor mats are included, you also have red stitching on the techno-vinyl cloth seats and Trailhawk badging on the outside. A spare tyre is also included - a must have for serious off-roading.
