The entry-level Prime-Line version of the Mazda MX-5 typically starts at £28,605 new, but I’ve found a used example from 2023 with the same trim for less than £16,500. This car comes with a 132hp 1.5-litre petrol engine and 26,453 miles on the clock, all for £16,375.
It also comes with the following features:

- Cruise control with intelligent speed assist
- Heated front seats
- Air conditioning dials
- Rear parking sensor
- Audio system with two speakers in driver headrest
Why should you buy a Mazda MX-5?
The Mazda MX-5 should be on your radar if you’re on the hunt for an affordable sports car. It sets the benchmark for driving enjoyment without the need to spend silly money on a Porsche or Ferrari.
Its 132hp 1.5-litre engine and 184hp 2.0-litre option both offer decent performance, although you’ll need to work the engines to get the most out of them. The six-speed manual gearbox is lovely to use, and the car handles wonderfully, too. That said, some drivers might find the entry-level engine lacks a little punch.
Don’t expect it to be particularly roomy, however. Space in the cabin is limited, and although there’s a handy lockable cubby hole behind the seats, practical storage space is in short supply. That said, the MX-5 was never designed to lug suitcases or groceries around.
If you’re looking for a car that’s incredibly fun to drive without the hefty price tag, the MX-5 is certainly worth considering.
