Mercedes AMG CLA 45: what would you like to read next?

Overall verdict

The sorts of numbers that the latest CLA can produce were, not that long ago, pretty much the reserve of supercars. Now, a (relatively) humble Mercedes four-door coupe can deliver 421hp and a 0-60mph sprint of 4.0 secs.

On the continent, there’s a cheaper model with ‘just’ 387hp, but in the UK there’s only the full-sugar CLA 45 S. Unlike its more humble little brother, the CLA 35, the CLA 45 S wears the full vertical-slat grille (like you find in the Mercedes-AMG GT supercar), plus various chunky body add-ons that look muscular, and are intended to improve the car’s aerodynamic performance. Big 19-inch alloys complete the CLA’s beefy makeover, along with quad exhausts.

Inside, there’s the same classy, tech-filled interior that you find in all versions of the latest A-Class. The infotainment system is a particular highlight. It is made from two screens, one for the driver’s digital dials (with AMG-specific design flourishes) and a touch-operated one for the sat-nav and media info.

The Mercedes-AMG CLA 45’s engine is officially the most powerful four-cylinder engine in production: that’s quite a stat to brag about to your mates.

The CLA 45 also has a touchpad and shortcut buttons between the front seats, plus a multi-function steering wheel, making it almost as easy to operate as BMW’s iDrive. There’s plenty of standard kit, too, with DAB radio, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto all standard.

The CLA 45 S gets a quick-shifting dual-clutch eight-speed automatic gearbox, which drives the power from the potent turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol to all four wheels. If you want to muck around a bit, its Drift Mode and standard rear sport differential will duly oblige.

Overall, the CLA 45 S is an enormously quick, capable and fun four-door coupe. However, it isn’t cheap, so head to our Mercedes deals pages to see how much you can save.
