Is the Mercedes CLA Shooting Brake Electric a good car?
The CLA Shooting Brake Electric is the more practical, estate-shaped version of the Mercedes CLA Electric saloon. It’s the longest-range electric electric estate car on sale and features loads of clever tech inside, but the screen-heavy cabin is just as Marmite as it is in the four-door version.
Small, stylish estate cars are few and far between these days. In fact, posh electric estate cars sit in rarefied air, with only the BMW i5 Touring, Audi A6 Avant e-tron, Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo and Volkswagen ID7 Tourer to consider - all of which are enormous and more expensive than the small CLA. The Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer Electric and Peugeot E-308 SW are similarly-sized, but have nowhere near as much street cred.
You can think of the CLA Shooting Brake as a small, handy carry-on rather than an enormous piece of luggage. It’s far easier to live with every day as it takes up less space than the alternatives, but it’s not the best choice if you regularly haul big loads around.

The little Mercedes looks sleeker than its gargantuan alternatives, too. The super-smooth corners aren’t to everyone’s tastes and the galaxy-sized array of Mercedes logos in the grille and lights is chintzy, but the silhouette and proportions make for a handsome little estate car.
Step inside and you’re greeted with even more outrageous styling, chiefly in the upright, screen-dominated dashboard. As with the saloon car, the standard-fit pair of displays (a third, passenger screen is optional) steal your attention. The infotainment system is the same as in the regular CLA Electric, so it will be easy to understand and responsive to the touch.
Interior storage looks just as generous as in the saloon, too, with a large centre console shelf between the front seats, phone-holding pads and large door pockets. Legroom in the back of the saloon is already generous, but the Shooting Brake ought to offer more generous space in the back for tall adults.
I really liked the Mercedes CLA Electric, and I think the Shooting Brake will be even easier to live with in the real world
The 455-litre boot is 50 litres bigger than in the CLA Electric, which isn’t very impressive as an estate car given the hatchback BMW i4 offers 470 litres of rear storage space. Still, the tailgate and tall-ish roof mean you’ll be able to load bulkier items into the Mercedes, and the 101-litre front-boot is enormous.
There are two battery options available for the CLA Shooting Brake. The larger 85kWh unit is already around in the CLA Electric saloon, and it’s paired to one of two motors. The CLA 250+ has 268hp and can travel up to 469 miles, while the CLA 350 has 349hp, dual-motors for all-wheel drive and a slightly lower 451-mile range. A new, entry-level 200 model has a smaller 58kWh battery for up to 321 miles of range at a lower starting price.

How much is the Mercedes CLA Shooting Brake Electric?
The Mercedes CLA Shooting Brake Electric starts at £40,150 in entry-level 200 guise, with the smaller battery and lower electric range. The CLA 250+ starts at £44,250 while the CLA 350 4MATIC can be had from £52,800. That’s still strong value against the non-estate BMW i4, though the Tesla Model 3 is still more affordable.
Whopping price difference for battery and motor options aside, the CLA Shooting Brake Electric varies massively in price depending on which trim level you choose. In fact, the top-rung AMG Line Premium Plus costs a mighty £9,200 more than the lowly Sport, with Sport Executive, AMG Line Executive and AMG Line Premium trims splitting the difference.
Even in entry-level guise the little Mercedes features a panoramic sunroof, LED lights with high-beam assist, privacy rear glass, park assist and 18-inch alloy wheels. AMG Line cars all feature a sportier body kit and flush-fitting door handles, while only the top-spec CLA comes with the third interior display and a full-width LED rear light as standard.
