Car changing is a big deal
Experts warn that car breakdowns have risen by 20% during this week’s heatwave. Here’s how you can reduce the risk.
Drivers are being urged to take extra care during this week’s extreme heat, with the RAC warning that car breakdowns have increased by around 20% as temperatures soar across the UK.
RAC road safety spokesperson Rod Dennis said that the organisation handled a fifth more breakdowns yesterday (24 June) than the normal level for this time in June.
London, Essex, Kent and Sussex in particular are seeing big increases in vehicles failing in the hot weather, with the most common faults relating to tyres, batteries, and overheated engines.
Drivers who do break down may face longer waits for assistance, as roadside recovery services prioritise the most urgent incidents.
“As much of the country endures a further day of extreme heat, we cannot emphasise enough the dangers of breaking down in these conditions,” he said. “Anyone who can delay non-essential trips until the weather starts to cool should do so.”

The RAC also warned that road surfaces can soften in extreme temperatures. You may notice gritting vehicles on some roads, as councils spread granite dust to help improve grip on melting tarmac.
Meanwhile, the organisation said not to be alarmed if you notice water underneath your car after parking. This is often harmless condensation from the air conditioning system.
Dennis added that drivers who have pre-existing problems such as a warning light on the dashboard must get these checkers by a mechanic or reputable garage before attempting to set off.
“These are exceptional times with many vital services affected by the fierceness of the summer heat, and we ask drivers to be patient as our breakdown patrols get to as many people as possible,” he said.
