Skoda is on a roll with the current high-performance Octavia vRS. Globally, it’s sold 200,000 vRS or RS-branded cars in its history and more than half of those are current-generation Octavia vRS models. The latest Octavia vRS 245 adds even more power to the car’s already tempting mix of easy, high performance driving and excellent practicality.
What is the Skoda Octavia vRS 245?
The Skoda Octavia vRS 245 sits at the top of the high performance Octavia vRS lineup. It’s available in both saloon and Estate forms and blends the brand’s famed practicality and easy driving experience with a potent 245hp 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine, along with a few other tweaks to make it a faster car in the real world.
Skoda Octavia vRS 245 styling
Unsurprisingly, the Octavia vRS 245 features the same front-end updates as the normal Octavia. This means the addition of ‘quad’ headlights – to our eyes a little fussier than the neater outgoing model. On the plus side, those headlights feature full-LED lighting with adaptive technology that automatically switches between high and low beam without dazzling other road users.
Elsewhere, black trim on the air intakes, front grille, wing mirrors and exhausts marks the 245 out from the rest of the range. A small bootlid spoiler is fitted to both the saloon and the Estate while large 19-inch alloy wheels and vRS badging round off the 245’s styling upgrades.
The cabin features sports seats trimmed in part-Alcantara and aluminium pedals to help the vRS feel a little sportier than the normal Octavia. Interior LED lights can also be set to one of 10 different colours to match your mood.
Skoda Octavia vRS 245 engines and driving
The same 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine as the old model features here but has 15hp more for a total of 245hp. This helps the saloon hit 62mph from rest in 6.6 seconds with the Estate doing the same sprint in 6.7. For the first time in an Octavia, a seven-speed dual-clutch DSG automatic gearbox can be specified – the previous model featured the older six-speed variety.
To have a better chance of handling the extra power, the vRS 245 is the only model in the range to feature a true limited-slip differential – in place of the normal vRS’s torque vectoring by braking. This helps the car grip more keenly through corners, especially when accelerating out of them. A 38mm-wider rear track – the distance between the rear wheels – plus a 14mm drop in ride height over a normal Octavia further enhances the car’s grip and resistance to body roll.
Skoda Octavia vRS 245 price and release date
Prices are expected to increase over the old £25,130 Octavia 230 to reflect the extra kit – we’d expect basic vRS 245 models to cost around £27,000. It’ll be officially launched at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show in March and hit the road shortly afterwards.
