Car changing is a big deal
The Xiaomi SU7 Ultra is a 1500hp Chinese hyper-saloon. Its performance is hugely impressive and it offers great value for money, but does it have too much power for the road? Our colleagues at Carwow Germany have got behind the wheel to find out
How much power is too much power? Well, the 1,500hp offered by the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra electric saloon might be just that – too much.
You might be more familiar with Xiaomi as a maker of mobile phones, smart watches, TVs, and even white goods like dehumidifiers. That’s not the kind of background you’d expect for a sleek-looking four-door saloon with McLaren-style headlights and the power, pace, and poise to pummel a Porsche.
The SU7 Ultra packs 1,526hp from three electric motors – two for the rear wheels, and one for the front. That’s as much power as a Bugatti Chiron, yet it’s in a car that looks like any other four-door saloon, albeit in a vibrant shade of yellow and with a lairy bodykit.
That’s enough power to propel this car from 0-62mph in just 2.0 seconds. Yes, you read that right. Its top speed, if you’re brave enough and you live near a German Autobahn, is 226mph, and it can lap the fearsome Nurburgring race circuit in just 6 minutes and 22 seconds.

That’s 22 seconds faster around the ‘Ring than a Porsche 911 GT3, and yet this is a car that, in Europe, costs around €105,000. It’s not on sale in the UK yet, but if it makes it to our shores it should only cost around £80,000; the same power as a Bugatti for a fraction of the cost.
It’s not some stripped-out performance machine, either. The SU7 Ultra has a conventional – and rather nice – interior, with a huge touchscreen and a row of physical climate control buttons. The neat three-spoke steering wheel looks and feels good, and you get Porsche-style driving mode buttons mounted to the spokes.
There’s decent space front and rear too, with a 454 litre boot and a 105 litre storage area in the front.

So far, so conventional, but then you look at the performance figures again. The SU7 Ultra really has otherworldly levels of speed, and that can be a problem. A car this explosively fast is hard to drive on the roads at times, as you’re constantly holding it back, like riding a panicked horse. Or hugging a ticking atom bomb.
You need to have the SU7 Ultra in ‘Boost’ mode to get full power, but even in lower power settings this is an obnoxiously quick car. That said, the steering is well judged and the carbon-ceramic brakes are excellent.

You could honestly use this car as a daily driver, though the range isn’t great. The official Chinese market claim is 390 miles, but it’ll probably be closer to 300 miles when the official figures are eventually worked out here.
It’s also faintly disappointing in terms of charging. The 93.7kWh battery can charge at more than 400kW of DC power in China, but in Europe and the UK – using the standard CCS charging plug – that falls to just 120kW.
All in all, you’d probably be better off in real life with the less-powerful, but still massively quick, 700hp Xiaomi SU7 Max. That shouldn’t take away from the fact that the Ultra model is a dramatic, brilliant way of showing the possibilities of electric performance cars.
