This is the Skoda Vision 0 concept, and it previews a future electric estate car which could replace the Octavia before the end of the decade. News Editor Jamie Edkins has flown out to Valencia to get up close with this car, and here are his thoughts.

I make no secret of the fact I’m a big Skoda fan. My parents have owned Octavias for over 15 years now, and I used to have a Mk1 Octavia vRS. So when Skoda invited me to check out the Vision 0, a concept car which may preview the next Octavia, I jumped at the chance.

I had a good look around the car, and even got to drive it for a short distance. Being a concept, there’s not much to say about the way it drives because I was limited to around 10mph, but I can tell you a lot about the design, interior and features you can expect to see on Skoda’s future cars.

New Skoda Vision 0 design – it looks awesome

Let’s start with the design, because this concept gives us an idea of how future Skoda models will look. It still has a lot of the traditional Skoda cues, just modern interpretations of them.

Starting up front, you have a new iteration of the “moustache” grille. It’s a band which runs around the entire front end, and the thin LED lights actually retract back into the bodywork when not in use. This isn’t something which is likely to make production, but it still looks cool in concept land.

Moving to the side, it looks almost coupe-esque rather than a boxy estate car. The sloping roofline lends it a sporty vibe, and the lack of a middle pillar means you have a huge glass area.

At the rear you have T-shaped taillights which blend into a band which runs along the bottom of the bootlid. It’s a really cool take on the rear lightbar, something which is done to death on modern cars.

New Skoda Vision 0 interior and technology: practical and relaxing

The first thing to note when getting into the Vision 0 is the rear-hinged back doors. Not only do they look impressive, there’s also no central pillar which gives you a massive opening to get into the car.

The massive windows also let loads of light into the cabin, which is packed with clever features. In front of you is a massive display which spans the width of the windscreen. Skoda calls it the Horizon Display, and it’s a bit like BMW’s Panoramic iDrive system which I tested back in November. Unlike that car, this isn’t projected onto the windscreen. It’s a separate screen.

It works as you’d expect. You get your driver information in front of you, you can have navigation directions in the middle and the passenger can customise their view as well. You also get a large portrait touchscreen in the centre console to control everything.

The interior has been designed as a relaxing place to spend time, and that’s why you have the light colour scheme. You also get physical switchgear in the centre console for operating major functions like the volume and climate control, making it nice and easy to use.

The materials are interesting as well. The seat covers are made from a recycled material called Flatknit, and the headrests look really interesting as well. They do set off my trypophobia a bit with all the holes, but at least they look cool.

New Skoda Vision 0 practicality: What Skoda does best

It wouldn’t be a Skoda estate car if it wasn’t hugely practical and the Vision 0 offers plenty of interior space and storage.

Up front you have cupholders hidden in the doors and some storage in the centre console, and the rear seats are also really spacious. Getting in the rear is a piece of cake thanks to those rear-hinged doors, and I had loads of knee room.

There are even magnetic wireless charging pads on the back of the front seats so you can stick your phone there and watch videos as it charges. What a great idea.

Moving to the boot, it’s massive. There’s more than 650 litres of space back there, which points towards this being an Octavia replacement as it’s slightly more than that car but some way off the Superb Estate’s 690-litre capacity.

There are more hidden features in the boot, including bins which slide out of the space between the boot opening and the bodywork. This is usually wasted space, so Skoda decided to utilise it for more storage.

There’s also a place to stow your charging cables to the side, which in a way is more useful than putting them in a front boot because they’re more easily accessible. The floor runners have a ruler printed on them so you can easily weigh up whether your IKEA wardrobe will fit, and there’s the usual array of hooks and tie-down points.

New Skoda Vision 0 – what’s powering it?

This concept car has a petrol hybrid system under the skin, but this isn’t the engine setup which the production car will have. It’s just in there so the car can be moved around.

Skoda says that the Vision 0 is a preview of a “future electrified estate car”, which means it’s likely to be a pure EV. There are no exact specs available yet, but you can expect to see some parts sharing with other Volkswagen Group products. This means an 86kWh battery with around 400 miles of range could be possible.

New Skoda Vision 0: when can I buy one?

Well, you can’t. The Vision 0 is a concept car which previews a future estate model front the brand – I reckon the next Octavia. The latest Superb was only launched a year ago, so the Octavia is next in line to be replaced – possibly in around 2028.

The production version will feature some of this car’s tech though, as well as similar styling cues when it arrives in a few years time. I can’t wait to see the final product.
