It uses the same 114hp hybrid engine as the Toyota Yaris, and it’s had a front-end makeover.

  • New Toyota Aygo X revealed
  • Mid-life update for Toyota’s smallest car
  • 1.0-litre engine ditched in favour of more powerful hybrid
  • GR Sport version offered for the first time
  • On sale later this year
  • Prices likely to start from around £18,000

This is the new Toyota Aygo X, an updated version of the brand’s smallest hatchback. The big news is that it ditches the lethargic 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine in favour of the 1.5-litre hybrid from the larger Yaris.

The entire range has been given a new face, and there’s also now a GR Sport version which gets more aggressive styling and tweaked suspension. It’ll go on sale at the end of 2025, however you can expect a slight price increase over the current car.

New Toyota Aygo X design

The new Toyota Aygo X is a tale of two halves. The front has been given a pretty significant update, whereas the rear appears to be pretty much the same as it was before.

The biggest over the outgoing car is the front lights. They’re now slightly sleeker and have a slim LED running light which runs into a new trim strip which runs along the bonnet. There’s also a much larger lower grill.

This gives the Aygo X a much more aggressive look, something which is most obvious on the new GR Sport trim. It looks like an adorable baby sibling to the GR Yaris – trying its hardest to look mean and sporty.

The honeycomb grille and black bonnet look pretty cool, and there are different wheels on the GR Sport to help it stand out.

New Toyota Aygo X engine and driving

The current Toyota Aygo X is only available with a pretty puny 1.0-litre engine with 72hp. This has been scrapped for the mid-life update, and in its place you’ll find the same hybrid engine as the larger Yaris.

This means it has a 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with an electric motor, and it puts out a combined 114hp. The extra 42hp gives it some added pep, slashing the 0-60mph time from almost 15 seconds to less than 10.

It should also be economical. Toyota hasn’t revealed the exact fuel economy for this car, but the Yaris can do a claimed 69mpg, so this lighter hatchback should easily get over 70mpg with the same engine.

If you’re looking to have fun on a twisty road, the GR Sport has tweaked suspension to make it more agile. It could be a great way to fill the hole left by small hot hatchbacks which are no longer on sale – such as the Suzuki Swift Sport.

New Toyota Aygo X price and specs

The new Toyota Aygo X will go on sale towards the end of 2025, however prices haven’t been confirmed just yet.

The current car starts from £16,900, however this new one has more standard equipment on board. All cars will get wireless phone charging, power-folding mirrors and a digital driver’s display, as well as that more complex hybrid engine.

A new starting price of around £18,000 therefore seems likely, which would still make it around £5,500 cheaper than the Yaris.
