The 300hp Audi SQ2 SUV has made its public debut at the Paris Motor Show. It has the performance to keep most hot hatches honest yet is clothed in a practical SUV body that features the kind of beautifully built interior that Audi’s renowned for. It’s almost an exact match for the 306hp BMW X2 M35i that was also revealed before Paris.
2019 Audi SQ2 price and release date
The Audi SQ2 is set to cost from around £35,000, although a few choice options will make that price soar to double that – food for thought when the larger, quick and cheaper-to-run Skoda Kodiaq vRS seven-seater will cost about the same. You can expect to see the SQ2 in UK showrooms from the start of next year.
2019 Audi SQ2 engines and driving
The Audi SQ2 takes its four-wheel-drive system and 2.0-litre, 300hp turbocharged petrol engine from the Audi S3 and it’s enough to fire the baby SUV from 0-62mph in just 4.8 seconds. That’s quick enough to see off a range of hot hatches.
The SQ2 is very definitely an SUV, though, and that’s despite its body being 20mm compared the normal Audi Q2. Nevertheless, its taller-than-average ride height should make it ideal for tackling Britain’s neglected B-roads.
Conveniently, all-weather performance should also be guaranteed because the SQ2’s quattro four-wheel drive system can send as much as 100 percent of power to the rear wheels when the fronts run out of grip. Throw in a seven-speed automatic gearbox that provides perfect, quick shifts time after time and you’re left with a car that doesn’t look that sporty but can in fact leave some sports cars in its dust.
2019 Audi SQ2 styling
The SQ2 looks much more aggressive than the regular Q2. You have a huge grille with vertical bars at the front which is flanked by massive air intakes. Around the side, new side skirts make the SQ2 seem lower to the ground than the standard Q2 and around the back there are real exhaust pipes, a roof spoiler and a small diffuser that’s more for decoration than anything else. As with all other Audi S models, the SQ2 will get silver mirror caps, but you can spec a black pack that paints the grille, parts of the bumpers and the mirror caps – you guessed it – black.
The interior will be lifted almost wholesale from the standard Q2, so you’ll still get a large screen with Apple and Android smartphone mirroring. There’ll be a choice of different inserts, such as polished aluminium or carbon fibre, dotted throughout the cabin to jazz it up, and you’ll get a flat-bottomed steering wheel, aluminium pedals, SQ2 badging and sports seats that will hold you in place through quick corners.
