Audi SQ6 e-tron Sportback Review & Prices

A high-performance take on the Q6 e-tron Sportback recipe, the SQ6 Sportback turns up the power and adds sportier looks, but it’s less practical than the SQ6 SUV

Find out more about the Audi SQ6 e-tron Sportback

Is the Audi SQ6 e-tron Sportback a good car?

The range-topping version of the Q6 e-tron Sportback, the SQ6 e-tron Sportback is the fastest, most-expensive version of Audi’s all-electric coupe-SUV. That means slick styling and plenty of electric range combined with lots of power, but the SQ6 e-tron Sportback’s interior is just as fussy as the regular car, too.

It’s a bit like choosing the highest-spec version of an iPhone or Google Pixel. The likelihood is you won’t use the SQ6 to its full potential, but it’s nice to know the extra capacity is there.

There aren’t many all-electric, high-performance coupe-SUVs to choose from (talk about niche…), but seeing as it’s a more swoopy version of the SQ6 e-tron, you’ll likely cross-shop it against the Tesla Model Y Performance, BMW iX3 and Polestar 4 Performance. Even a Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is a similar size, though it doesn’t look like it in pictures.

While the entry-level Q6 e-tron Sportback is a frumpy thing in most trim levels with small wheels, the SQ6 e-tron Sportback is a far more handsome beast. Big wheels and wide arches may seem like a cheap trick for making a car look posh, but it’s a combo that works especially well on the big, sleek Audi - especially in bright blue or red paint.

The interior is more divisive. It’s near-identical to the petrol-powered SQ5, which means swathes of Alcantara and a pair of very attractive sports seats up front. Sadly not enough of the cabin has been suede-trimmed as there are far too many hard, scratchy plastics in easy-to-reach places - totally unbefitting of a £90,000 car. You can, at least, opt for some funky leather finishes - if you get your wallet out.

I'm pleasantly surprised at how little boot capacity has been lost compared to the SQ6 SUV

Audi’s curved infotainment and driver display combo is handsome as ever, but the optional third screen is still an ugly, unnecessary touch - and it’s stingy that it only comes as standard on the highest trim level.

As with the regular Q6 e-tron Sportback, space up front is generous enough and it’s easy to get comfortable. The sloping roofline hampers back seat room for adults, but at least the boot is almost the same size as in the SUV.

The SQ6 comes with a 94.9kWh battery, offering up to 370 miles of range and a 0-60mph time of 4.3 seconds thanks to its pair of electric motors; one for each axle meaning all-wheel drive.

The regular Q6 e-tron is a mixed bag, because it’s very comfortable in town and on the motorway, though a letdown on a twisty road. The SQ6 ought to rectify that with its sports suspension, and if other Audi S models are any indication, it shouldn’t lose much refinement in the process.

How much is the Audi SQ6 e-tron Sportback?

Starting at almost £90,000 in Black Edition trim, the SQ6 is almost 50% more expensive than the Q6 on which it’s based. Granted it’s better equipped and far quicker, but that’s a lot of money nonetheless.

Step up to Vorsprung spec and the price goes up to an eye-watering £97,000, with only the addition of OLED taillights, a glass roof, the passenger display and fancier Y-spoke wheels - all things that ought to come as standard on a range-topping model, anyway…

Compared to the BMW iX3, Tesla Model Y Performance and Polestar 4 Performance the Audi is really very pricey, until you compare it to the uber-expensive Mercedes-AMG EQE 53 with its £115,000 price tag.
