BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe interior

The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe has a cabin full of expensive materials but the overall design is not as exciting as in the A5 Sportback

Style

The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe has an interior design that errs on the sporty side. This means the whole centre console and all the buttons are arranged towards the driver. You’ll also like just how solid everything feels but the overall look is a bit dated.

Go for an entry-level SE trim which is only available with the 420d engine and you get leather upholstery as standard alongside silver trim inserts that give it a techy feel overall. Move on up to mid-range Sport trim and you get piano black trim inserts, ambient lighting, a leather upholstered steering wheel with red stitching and sport seats. Top-spec M Sport trim’s main interior additions are a few M badges, black headliner and cool trim inserts with a hexagon design – the M Sport gets pretty close to the interior look of the M4.

The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe interior has a sports car vibe but it’s lacking in the exciting looks department

Infotainment

Every BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe comes with an infotainment system but there are two levels you can choose from. Entry-level SE models get a 6.5-inch infotainment screen with BMW’s sat-nav system included which has live traffic alerts. You also get DAB radio and Bluetooth on the most basic system.

Pick a BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe in M Sport trim and you’ll get the BMW Professional system which comes with a larger 8.0-inch screen, a touch-sensitive iDrive controller and all sorts of connected features that can do things such as get you the latest news, find out fuel prices around you or stream your favourite music.

An option worth considering is the Digital Cockpit display, which replaces traditional dials with a 12.3-inch screen. Its appearance changes depending on which mode you’re in – in Sport you get red dials and a power output gauge – but it is at its best when transformed into a huge, colourful map that makes following the sat nav’s directions really easy and satisfying.

Another option is the head-up display. It’s part of the expensive Professional Plus package, but it’s such a boon in everyday driving that you’d wonder how you’ve lived without it. It shows you information such as your speed, the current speed limit and the next sat-nav direction directly in front of you so you don’t even need to look down at the dials – neat.
