Mat’s car of the day: a used BMW iX is an ultra-luxurious electric car for the same price as a Jaecoo E5

The BMW iX has been around for a while now, and I reckon its days could be numbered now that the all-electric BMW iX5 is just around the corner. As it stands though, the iX is still the brand’s flagship EV, and as such it’s rather expensive.

However, depreciation has taken its toll on early examples, and now you can get this fabulous electric car for the same price as a Jaecoo E5.

Used BMW iX deals

Through Carwow, I’ve found a 2022 BMW iX M Sport with just over 34,000 miles on the clock for a shade under £30,000. This car cost £75,000 when it was new, so that’s a saving of around 60%.

Not only is it way cheaper than a new iX, it’s also around the same price as a new, top-spec Jaecoo E5. That car is much smaller than the iX, and nowhere near as luxurious inside.

This iX comes with heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a 14.9-inch infotainment screen, leather on the seats, door cards and dashboard and a 326hp electric motor driving the rear wheels. The range isn’t great though at 264 miles.

Why should you buy a used BMW iX?

There’s a lot to like about the BMW iX, starting with the interior. The dashboard design is stunning, and material quality is also top-notch. It feels special inside, and the technology is also really good.

The massive infotainment screen is bright, clear and easy to use, and it’s paired with a smart-looking digital driver’s display. It’s a shame there aren’t more physical buttons inside, but the switches you do get feel solid and high quality.

Then there’s the way this thing drives. It may be a very heavy car, but it still glides over bumps and it is really quiet on the motorway. The iX is a relaxing cruiser, and it’s also easy to drive around town thanks to the excellent surround-view camera system.

Are there any drawbacks to consider?

As with any car, the BMW iX does have its drawbacks. The exterior styling is pretty polarising, for starters, and there’s no storage under that massive bonnet like you get on a Tesla Model Y.

It’s also not quite as fun on a twisty road as you might expect a BMW to be. It does a great job of limiting body roll, and the steering is precise, but you can’t hide this car’s sheer size and weight on a tight country lane.

Then there are the risks you take buying a used car. Being a 2022 model, this iX has run out of manufacturer warranty. Some used car dealers do offer some coverage for peace of mind, but this is usually one year at best. You’ll be paying out for any repairs.

But if you’re after the most luxurious electric car for under £30,000, I reckon a used BMW iX is well worth a look. It’s comfortable, feels posh inside and has loads of cutting-edge tech.
