In Design spec, the BYD Seal U has a list price of £40,015. Buy through Carwow and the price drops to just under £37,000. I reckon that’s a cracking price for such a high-tech car.

That money buys the 1.5-litre petrol plug-in hybrid which has a motor on the rear axle to make the BYD four-wheel drive. It has a punchy 324hp for a 0-62mph time of 5.9 seconds. Design spec is the top of the range, so this Seal U has lots of kit as standard.

Why should I buy the BYD Seal U?

To my way of thinking, the best thing about the Seal U is the plug-in hybrid system. The high-powered 4×4 can go 43 miles running on electricity in official tests. If you don’t mind less power, the Comfort model has a range of 77 miles. It’s not just about the numbers – the hybrid is very quiet and refined.

There’s a lot of space inside the BYD and an excellent infotainment system. A better finish and a more composed driving experience would make a decent car into a really good one.

BYD Seal U alternatives

If you are undecided and want to consider some other options, think about these three:

• Jaecoo 7: Another keenly priced and roomy Chinese SUV. The Jaecoo is let down by a stiff ride.
• Kia Sportage: Not as keenly priced as the BYD, but the Sportage is practical and stylish.
• Peugeot 5008: Lots of seats, lots of space, lots of tech. But the Peugeot is also lots of money compared with the BYD.
