Is the Changan Deepal S05 a good car?

The Changan Deepal S05 is a posh, style-focused electric car, hot on the heels of the larger Deepal S07. It’s a small SUV with a lot of storage space and loads of standard kit, but some alternatives offer longer range.

It’s yet another Chinese entrant to the market, but with an even greater emphasis on style than the likes of the Omoda E5 and Jaecoo E5. You’ll likely cross-shop it against the BYD Atto 3, smaller but premium Renault 4 and the larger, more practical Citroen e-C5 Aircross as well as the excellent Skoda Elroq.

Changan Deepal S05: electric range, battery and charging data

Range: 278 - 303 miles
Efficiency: 3.9mi/kWh (RWD)
Battery size: 68.8kWh
Max charge speed: 200kW
Charge time AC: 7hrs 30min, 0-100%, 11kW
Charge time DC: 15mins, 30-80%, 200kW
Charge port location: Right side, rear
Power outputs: 268hp, 429hp

Though on appearances, aside from the Renault’s retro-tastic-ness and the Citroen’s quirky features, there aren’t many small electric SUVs which look quite as slick as the Changan. The rear light bar is fairly generic, but the Deepal S05’s big-wheel-low-roofline is very upmarket, as are the details and lower lights on the front bumper.

I think the Deepal S05 looks great, far less generic than some of the new SUVs on the market

The interior is much like that in the larger Deepal S07, with a sleek dashboard, wide centre console and the option of outrageous (read: excellent) orange upholstery. Almost all of the car’s functions are found on the whopping 15.4-inch central display, as is the speedometer, but you also have a head-up display as standard.

There’s a generous storage compartment between the front seats, large door bins and - if the larger Deepal S07 is any indication - plenty of room in the back for a car of this size. The 492-litre boot is a good chunk larger than the Kia EV3 and Skoda Elroq, plus the S05 has an impressive 159-litre front boot.

You won’t have a tough time choosing a battery for the S05, because there’s only one option: a 68.8kWh unit which can be had with either rear- or all-wheel drive. The former offers up to 303 miles of range, while the latter can travel 278 miles to a charge. Neither version can go as far as alternatives which come with larger batteries, but they’re more expensive than the Changan, too.

How much is the Changan Deepal S05?

The Deepal S05 starts at almost £38,000 in RWD guise, which is quite expensive against an entry-level Skoda Elroq or Kia EV3. By the time you’ve added enough options to either model to come anywhere near the Changan’s equipment levels, however, you’ll be paying well over £40,000. That means the S05 is actually great value for money, even in AWD guise at almost £40,000.

There’s only one trim level in the Changan, which comes equipped with LED lights, an augmented-reality head-up display, full-leatherette interior, heated and ventilated front seats and 20-inch alloys as standard.
