Mat’s Car of the Day: the Chery Tiggo 4 is already cheap, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get it cheaper
Car changing is a big deal
Mat Watson recommends the Chery Tiggo 4 to anyone looking for a cheap, well-equipped small SUV, and you can save almost £2,700 on one when you buy through Carwow.
This is the Chery Tiggo 4, and it’s a car which ticks a lot of boxes. It may not be a petrolhead’s dream, but I reckon it’s one of the best-value cars on sale today. I’m going to explain why you should consider it, as well as give you some tips on how to get the best deal.
Three reasons you should consider buying a Chery Tiggo 4
1. It’s the cheapest full-hybrid SUV on sale
At £20,000, the Chery Tiggo 4 is the cheapest way to get into a hybrid SUV. It’s only a few hundred pounds more than an MG3 hybrid, and that’s a small hatchback with way less interior space than this. It’s also more than £5,000 cheaper than a Dacia Duster hybrid.
2. You get loads of standard equipment
All versions of the Tiggo 4 come with LED lights, keyless entry, a reversing camera and a pair of 12.3-inch screens. For an extra £2,000 you can get the top-spec Summit model, which adds artificial leather upholstery, heated seats, a heated steering wheel and a 360-degree camera.
3. It’s really roomy inside
Space in the back of the Tiggo 4 is excellent for a small SUV like this. Six-footers will be able to get comfy back there, and the large windows make it feel bright and airy. The boot is pretty big as well, with 430 litres of space on offer. That’s more than you get in a Volkswagen T-Cross or Toyota Yaris Cross.
Chery Tiggo 4 prices and deals
The Chery Tiggo 4 starts from just £19,995, but I’d go the whole hog and get the top-spec Summit model. Basic cars get a nasty plastic steering wheel and cloth seats, and the range-topper is only a couple of grand more expensive.
Plus, through Carwow you can save £2,679 on the Tiggo 4 Summit at the time of writing. That brings the price down to £20,317. To put that into perspective, a basic Ford Puma costs around £24,000 through Carwow, but that car doesn’t have heated seats or a 360-degree camera, and the infotainment screen is much smaller.
Three annoying things about the Chery Tiggo 4
It may be a good car, but the Chery Tiggo 4 isn’t perfect. Here are three annoying things.
1. The hump in the boot floor
The boot may be a good size, but it does have one baffling and annoying quirk. Chery needed to put the 12-volt battery somewhere, so it placed it under a hump in the boot floor. I’ve never seen that before, and it makes loading large items into the load area harder than it needs to be.
2. It’s not that economical
When I tested the Chery Tiggo 4, I managed to get 48mpg from it. That’s about on-par with the most economical petrol-powered cars, such as the Volkswagen T-Cross, but it’s not great compared to other hybrid SUVs. The Toyota Yaris Cross and Dacia Duster hybrid will easily do over 60mpg in the real world.
3. It’s not brilliant to drive
If you’re looking for something to put a smile on your face through the bends, the Tiggo 4 isn’t it. The steering is really vague, and it leans quite a lot around corners as well. A Ford Puma is more enjoyable to drive.
