Cupra wants to make sporty cars, but it also wants to make frugal and efficient plug-in hybrids. Has it managed to do that? Well, the new 272hp long-range plug-in hybrid engine it’s using in the Leon, Formentor, and Terramar certainly suggests so…

Cupra Hybrid range: current models

Cupra currently has four hybrid models in its lineup – the Leon hatchback, Leon Estate, Formentor SUV, and Terramar SUV.

Cupra Leon

The Cupra Leon — essentially a sportier version of the Seat Leon — has just been given a restyle to make it look more Cupra-y. It also gets a choice of 204hp or 272hp plug-in hybrid systems that mixes 7.3-second 0-62mph times with a claimed 82-mile range on electric power. Decent to drive, but you do lose a lot of boot space to the hybrid system.

Cupra Leon Estate

The estate version of the Cupra Leon Hybrid gets you around some of the boot space loss that afflicts the hatchback model, and it’s better looking too. Still good to drive, and the 272hp plug-in hybrid model feels properly quick.

Cupra Formentor

As with the Leon models, Cupra’s compact Formentor SUV has been given a restyle that gives it a lizard-like face and a choice of 204hp or 272hp plug-in hybrid models, which are quick but which boast 70 miles or more of electric range. The 272hp does get a bit thirsty on long runs, though, and the boot shrinks compared to the standard petrol Formentor.

Cupra Terramar

Think of the Terramar as being Cupra’s answer to the VW Tiguan — same mechanical bits underneath, but a sexier and slightly lower-slung body on top. As with the other Cupra models, there’s a choice of 204hp or 272hp plug-in hybrids with an electric range of up to 76 miles. Slick to drive, but quite pricey and everyone will ask you what the heck it is.
