New Volkswagen ID Tiguan vs Skoda Enyaq: is VW’s new SUV worth waiting for?

October 30, 2026 by

The Volkswagen ID4 is soon to be replaced with the ID Tiguan, and there are a lot of upgrades which make VW’s electric SUV way more appealing. The interior has been overhauled, it’s got more range than before and it’s packed with new tech, but will it be better than the Skoda Enyaq?

Whereas you can have an Enyaq now, you’ll have to wait until early 2027 to get the new ID Tiguan. To find out if it’s worth waiting for the Volkswagen, I’m going to compare the stats on these two cars.

Remember, you can buy a brand new or used car right here on Carwow. And you can sell your car, too. We’re here to help you through every step of your car-changing journey.

Space and practicality

When it comes to luggage space, the Skoda Enyaq is still the benchmark. Its huge boot holds 585 litres, rising to 1,710 litres with the rear seats folded. The ID.Tiguan offers a little less at 534 litres, rising to 1,577 litres with the rear seats down.

The Volkswagen does have the bigger front boot, with 32 litres against 21 litres in the Enyaq. The Enyaq only recently gained a front boot as part of a minor update, so if you buy a nearly-new or used example it won’t have one at all.

You get loads of space in the Enyaq’s rear seats, and while we’ve not been hands-on with the ID Tiguan yet the ID4 was equally commodious. We’ve no reason to believe the ID Tiguan will be much different.

Interior and technology

We’ve often criticised the fiddly touch-sensitive sliders in the ID4, and Volkswagen has finally got rid of them. The ID Tiguan’s dashboard has had a thorough redesign. The steering wheel has proper physical buttons again, and there’s a handy row of climate control switches beneath the large 15-inch infotainment screen.

There’s also an optional 12-inch passenger display, which you can pair with headphones so your front passenger can stream films without distracting you while you drive.

The Enyaq’s climate controls are operated through the touchscreen, although there is a row of shortcut buttons for things like your window demisters. You also get a titchy 5.0-inch digital driver’s display, whereas the Volkswagen’s is 10.0-inches. It’s the same display as you get in the new Volkswagen ID Polo, which means you can change them to a cool retro view replicating the dials from older Volkswagen models. It’s a really cool touch.

Overall, the ID Tiguan’s interior looks a bit more modern and high-tech than the Skoda’s, and with more physical buttons it should be easier to operate everything as well.

Range, battery and charging

Underneath, both SUVs share a lot of parts, so there’s little to separate them on performance. Each is offered with a choice of a 58kWh battery or a larger 77kWh pack. With the bigger battery, both have excellent range, managing an identical 373 miles on a charge.

One detail worth knowing if you’re tempted by an entry-level model: the basic Enyaq charges at up to 165kW and goes from 10 to 80% in a speedy 24 minutes. The base ID Tiguan is a little disappointing here, peaking just 105kW. That adds about two minutes to the same charge. With the larger batteries, both charge at a decent speed – up to 165kW for the Volkswagen, and the Enyaq topping out at 175kW.

Verdict: is the ID Tiguan worth waiting for?

UK pricing for the ID.Tiguan hasn’t been confirmed yet , while the Enyaq and the current ID4 are available for just under £40,000. We don;t expect the new ID Tiguan to cost much more than that, so the decision is likely to come down to preference rather than price.

The Skoda Enyaq remains a brilliant choice for families. If maximum space is your top priority and you want a solid, no-fuss electric SUV with strong charging speeds even in entry-level form, the Enyaq won’t let you down. It also has availability on its side: you can order one today, while the ID Tiguan isn’t arriving until early next year.

The ID Tiguan is a huge step-up on the old Volkswagen ID4, with better range, interior tech and practicality. It also has physical buttons going for it, which is something a lot of buyers have been crying out for over the last few years.

If you’re currently torn between the current Volkswagen ID4 and the Skoda Enyaq, and you need a car right now, we’d recommend buying the Enyaq. However, if you’ve got a few months left on your finance agreement, and therefore won’t be changing your car for a while, we reckon the new Volkswagen ID Tiguan will be worth a look.
