Jaecoo 7 vs Geely Starray: which plug-in hybrid offers more for your money?
October 22, 2026 by Siobhan Doyle
Which of these two Chinese SUVs offers better equipment and the best value across new, used and lease deals? Consumer writer Siobhan Doyle breaks down the numbers so you don’t have to.
The Jaecoo 7 continues to grow in popularity in the UK. In fact, it was the country’s best-selling car in September. But if the Jaecoo isn’t quite to your liking and you want to keep costs down, the Geely Starray is also worth considering.
Both SUVs are available with plug-in hybrid engines, and it’s the version of the Jaecoo 7 that we’d highly recommend. Put the two up against each other, though, and you might start to wonder whether September’s best-selling car really is worth the hype.
To find out, I’ve compared the Jaecoo 7 with the Geely Starray, looking at equipment, pricing and the latest new, used and leasing deals to help you decide which Chinese SUV offers better value for money.
To keep things as comparable as possible, I’ve chosen plug-in hybrid versions that sit in a similar price bracket: the Jaecoo 7 Luxury and the Geely Starray Ultra. The Jaecoo 7 Luxury is priced from £35,170, while the Starray Ultra starts at £34,990.
So, which one is worth your attention? Read on to find out.

Which has better equipment?

First, let’s compare their range and equipment when buying new. Both cars offer plenty of standard features, but what do they actually give you?
Here’s a breakdown of what each car has to offer:

As the table above shows, both models offer similar levels of equipment. However, the Starray has a few extra touches, including a power sunshade and a more premium sound system.

Buying new
Next, let’s compare how much each car costs to buy. As many people choose to finance a car rather than pay for it outright, I’m using PCP finance for my calculations. This popular option allows you to spread the cost of a car over monthly payments, with the amount based on its depreciation over the agreement.
To keep things fair, I’ve used the official Jaecoo and Geely websites to calculate the costs, based on a three-year agreement, an annual mileage limit of 8,000 miles and a £5,000 deposit for each car. I’ve also assumed that you’ll hand the car back at the end of the agreement.

At the time of writing, both cars were available with 0% APR and a 0% fixed annual interest rate, meaning no interest would be charged on top of the finance agreement. However, Geely is also offering a £500 finance contribution towards the Starray’s deposit, bringing the total deposit to £5,500.05 to ensure the deal qualifies for interest-free finance.
Here’s a breakdown of all the costs you can expect:
| Jaecoo 7 Luxury | Geely Starray Ultra | |
|---|---|---|
| Car’s list price | £35,170 | £34,990 |
| Initial deposit | £5,000 | £5,500.05 |
| Regular monthly payments | £406.97 | £402.77 |
| Total cost to PCP if you return the car | £19,244 | £19,097 |
The figures above show that the Geely Starray works out slightly cheaper than the Jaecoo 7 when bought on comparable finance terms and with the same annual mileage allowance. Much of this comes down to Geely’s £500 deposit contribution, which you don’t have to pay back to the finance company.
It just goes to show how worthwhile it can be to shop around for finance deals when comparing cars. Incentives such as deposit contributions, like the one offered by Geely, as well as low or 0% APR deals, can make a big difference to the overall cost. It’s certainly worth looking beyond the monthly payments and comparing the total amount payable, too. As always, make sure you read the fine print.
Which is cheaper to buy used?
Buying used is another option worth considering. To see which model offers better value for money, we compared the two on Carwow, looking at like-for-like examples in the Jaecoo 7 Luxury and Geely Starray Ultra trims, similarly to the PCP deals.
I found two used examples from 2026, both with less than 5,000 miles on the clock. Here’s how much they cost:
Jaecoo 7 Luxury |
Geely Starray Ultra |
|
|---|---|---|
| Mileage | 4,112 miles | 4,000 miles |
| Used price | £25,399 | £28,790 |
This shows that a comparable Jaecoo 7 is around £3,500 cheaper. And because it has been on sale in the UK for longer, there’s also a wider choice of older used models if you’re looking to save even more. The Jaecoo 7 arrived in the UK in January 2025, whereas the Geely Starray officially went on sale here in February 2026.

That wider choice gives you a better chance of finding a bargain, so it’s worth shopping around and considering older examples if you’re looking to save money.
Bear in mind, too, that used-car prices and availability can change frequently, so the best deals will depend on when and where you shop.
Which is cheaper to lease?
Leasing is another option worth considering. As with the PCP deals, I’ve assumed a three-year term, 8,000 miles per year and a 12-month initial payment. The comparisons are also based on the same versions used in my PCP analysis: the Jaecoo 7 Luxury and Geely Starray Ultra.
Here are some leasing deals available on Carwow at the time of writing, and how they compare:
| Jaecoo 7 Luxury | Geely Starray Ultra | |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly payment | £294.49 | £247.83 |
| Initial payment | £3,887.88 | £3,373.95 |
| Total cost | £14,195.03 | £12,048 |
Over three years, leasing the Starray could save you almost £2,150 compared with the Jaecoo 7. You’ll also pay almost £50 less per month. I’d recommend comparing leasing deals alongside PCP when looking for the best way to finance your next car.
So, which one is the best value?

My calculations suggest that the Geely Starray offers better value for money if you’re considering PCP finance or leasing. That said, you’re more likely to find a good deal on a Jaecoo 7 that’s over a year old, as there’s a wider choice of used models available.
Both cars are certainly worth considering. Ultimately, it comes down to which equipment and features you prioritise and the deals you can find. Remember to compare the overall cost of ownership, as well as the features that matter most to you.
