Has Jaguar just outdone Ferrari with the Type 01?

October 08, 2026 by

It seems that 2026 is the year to ruffle some feathers in the car world, because there have been plenty of weird and wild new models revealed. The Ferrari Luce set the internet ablaze earlier in the year, and now the Jaguar Type 01 is lighting up comment sections as well.

They’re very different on paper, but there’s one theme which unites them. People are crying out that these brands have betrayed their roots with these cars, or words to that effect, because both are totally different to anything they’ve done before.

The Luce is Ferrari’s first ever electric car, while Jaguar discontinued all its existing models and started anew with the Type 01. Do they have anything else in common? I’m going to compare them to find out.

Remember, you can buy a brand new or used car right here on Carwow. And you can sell your car, too. We’re here to help you through every step of your car-changing journey.

Jaguar Type 01 vs Ferrari Luce: design

Love them or hate them, you can’t deny these cars will both turn heads. Ferrari and Jaguar took very different approaches here – let’s start with the Type 01.

It looks like a cyberpunk version of the car Cruella de Vil would drive with that enormous bonnet, but it’s entirely for show. There’s nothing under there, not even a front boot. This is because of something Jaguar calls “the luxury gap”, which is the distance between your feet as the driver and the front wheels. The bigger, the better, apparently.

There’s no denying that it looks imposing, and it’s even cooler from the rear with that sloping roofline and the horizontal slats.

There is nothing retro or old-school about the Ferrari Luce – it looks even more futuristic than the Jaguar. With no engine under the bonnet, the designers have pushed the windscreen forward and given it a shorter nose than a traditional car. Funnily enough, this is very similar to what Jaguar did with the I-Pace electric car back in 2018.

It’s also taller than the Type 01, giving it a more SUV-like appearance. There is some Ferrari traditionalism at the rear with the four round tail lights, but that’s about it.

Jaguar Type 01 vs Ferrari Luce: interior

When you step inside, the roles are totally reversed. Ferrari has gone for the retro vibe, while the Jaguar is anything but.

The stand-out feature in the Luce is the steering wheel. It’s a super-thin metal three-spoke affair, and it looks like the sort of thing you’d find in an old Ferrari 308 from the 1970s. The interior was actually designed by Sir Jony Ive, designer of the original iPhone, and I’m getting an Apple Watch vibe from the swivelling centre screen.

It’s also packed with lots of physical buttons and switches, something the Jaguar does without. In the Type 01 you get a tiny climate control screen in the centre console, a digital driver’s display with your infotainment system built-in, and that’s about it.

It also has a massive spine dividing the entire cabin down the middle. It’s certainly a centrepiece, but it makes this big Jag a strict four-seater. The Luce can accommodate up to five people.

That said, the Jaguar has more of a luxury vibe. The cabin is brighter than the Luce’s, and the minimalist look is more conducive to a relaxing environment. The Ferrari looks like more of a tech fest inside.

Jaguar Type 01 vs Ferrari Luce: motors, range and performance

Powering the Jaguar Type 01 you have three electric motors, and they put out a combined 1,030hp. The Ferrari Luce has four motors, but only 20 more horsepower.

Despite this, it’s a lot faster than the Jaguar. The Luce will do 0-62mph in 2.5 seconds, while the Jaguar takes 3.2 seconds. However, the Type 01 is more of a grand tourer than the Luce, so it’s set up for continent-crossing comfort rather than outright pace.

To this effect, the Jaguar has a massive 118kWh battery with up to 450 miles of range, while the Ferrari gets 329 miles of range from a 122kWh pack.

Jaguar Type 01 vs Ferrari Luce: what’s the verdict?

The price will be the main deciding factor between these two cars, because the Jaguar Type 01 has a predicted starting price of around £120,000, while the Ferrari Luce costs £470,000.

The Luce is more practical than the Jaguar, and it’s faster, but the Jaguar will go further on a charge and, based on the public reaction, the design has been better received.

What both of these cars do is make a statement, and in an industry full of cookie-cutter SUVs that’s no bad thing.
