The new i30 Tourer’s interior looks swish and is easy to use, but a Volkswagen Golf Estate still feels more upmarket
Style
The Hyundai i30 Tourer’s interior is a pleasing mix of modern design and simple, easy-to-reach controls. A clear set of buttons and knobs on the centre console control the car’s heating and ventilation functions and – on S models and above – you get a slick touchscreen infotainment system.
SE models get a five-inch unit while all versions in SE Nav guise and above sport a larger eight-inch screen that’s clearer and easier to read on the move. Both screens come mounted on the dashboard and feature some handy shortcut buttons to make them as easy to use as possible.
The doors and steering wheel feel nice and soft and you’ll find a few more suitably squidgy plastics dotted around the cabin too. SE models and above get a few leather trims and chrome-effect door handles while Premium and Premium SE versions come with heated seats trimmed in man-made and real leather respectively.
Overall the VW Golf Estate’s interior is slightly plusher, but the i30 Tourer’s cabin is still very well designed and feels like it’ll stand up to the rigours of family life equally well.

Infotainment
Entry-level S models do without any fancy high-tech touchscreens – you’ll have to settle for Bluetooth connectivity and a DAB digital radio. Step up to an SE model and you’ll get a five-inch touchscreen system, but SE Nav models or higher are the way to go – they come with a much-improved eight-inch screen.
The larger screen sits in pride of place on the i30 Tourer’s dashboard and comes with satellite navigation, smartphone mirroring, DAB digital radio and Bluetooth as standard. It’s bright, clear and fairly easy to read – even in direct sunlight – and comes with handy shortcut buttons that make switching between menus a breeze.
The screen isn’t quite as high-res as the systems you’ll find in a VW Golf Estate or Skoda Octavia Estate but it’s easy enough to input a postcode and follow the sat-nav’s directions.
If you don’t like using Hyundai’s own system then that’s not a problem. The bigger infotainment system comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring as standard so you can use your phone’s navigation or music streaming apps through the built-in screen instead.
There’s no optional stereo upgrade but the i30 Tourer’s standard six-speaker stereo system sounds perfectly acceptable. Just don’t expect to have your internal organs moved around by Barry White’s bass notes.
