Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Four-door Electric Review & Prices

The Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Electric is a rapid super-saloon with ridiculous power levels, loads of tech on board and a very swoopy silhouette, but the front and rear-end design is divisive at best and you’ll pay a small fortune for the range-topping versions.

The AMG GT 4-Door comes hot on the heels of the svelte Porsche Taycan, beefy Audi RS e-tron GT and the achingly cool Polestar 5. Now that there are a few options for ultra high-performance electric grand tourers on sale, you can think of the Mercedes as a new top-of-the-line smartphone, vying to be the most powerful and desirable of the lot.

As with a new smartphone, if you look at the AMG GT 4-Door from the side, you’ll struggle to tell it apart from its alternatives. There’s more than a passing resemblance to the Taycan, save for a sharper boot-lip spoiler, but the similarities are down to an aero-optimised design.

No, it’s the front- and rear-end styling that makes the big Merc stand out, and not necessarily for good reason. The fish-like grille and headlights are at odds with the hyper-futuristic, rocket-like taillights.

Entry-level GT 53 models feature subtler bumpers, and actually look a bit better than the GT 55 and GT 63 versions as a result.

But if you think the exterior design is a bit wacky, you’re not ready for the interior. Mercedes has given the GT 4-Door a driver-focused variation of the all-screen dashboards seen on the smaller CLA and C-Class Electric models, with the central display and centre console controls angled aggressively towards the driver.

It definitely feels purposeful, with a wide centre console, sports steering wheel, supportive seats and lashings of carbon fibre giving the GT 4-Door some real attitude inside. The heavy expanse of gloss black plastic around the staggered displays is the only real let-down in the cabin, as we noticed when we had a static walk around of a GT 63 model.

Front seat space is generous enough, while the sloping roofline doesn’t much impede on rear headroom, and some clever battery packaging means the back seats offer good under-thigh support, too. Non-sunroof models are a touch dark in the back, though.

A hatchback tailgate opens wide to reveal a 415-litre boot, which is a touch larger than that in a Taycan saloon or an RS e-tron GT and a good chunk roomier than a Polestar 5. But the Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo has a more generous still 446-litre boot. The AMG GT 4-Door also has a 41-litre front boot.

Range varies from 483 miles in the entry-level GT53 to 419 miles in the range-topping GT 63 Premium Plus. Power varies even more, though, with the GT 63 more than doubling the GT 53’s 544hp output to an almighty 1,169hp. More than a Taycan Turbo GT’s puny 1,034hp, but the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra has a ridiculous 1,548hp.

Mercedes has fitted the AMG GT 4-Door with 350kW charging tech, which means the 106kW battery can charge from 10-80% in just 16 minutes - if you can find a powerful enough plug. Home charging at 11kW will take 11 hours from empty.

We have yet to drive the AMG GT 4-Door in any guise, but we’ll update this review with our impressions once we’ve sampled the bonkers ‘Benz from behind the wheel.

The AMG GT 53 kicks off the range at £103,000, followed by the more powerful GT 55 at £120,000 and the outrageous, range-topping GT63 at £160,000. You’ll pay a lot less for a Porsche Taycan in entry-level trim, and less again for an Audi e-tron GT.

The top-of-the-line Taycan Turbo GT starts at a whopping £189,000, while the RS e-tron GT Carbon Vorsprung costs almost £150,000 - putting them roughly in line with the top-spec GT 4-Door models. That’s a lot of GT action to consider. You might even need a G&T to unwind after choosing one.

All versions come in Premium trim, with Augmented Reality driver assists, self-park functionality, projector LED headlights, a Burmester sound system, heated seats and steering wheel, 20-inch wheels and a panoramic glass roof.

For an extra £14,000 on any model, the Premium Plus pack adds illuminated patterns to the glass roof, blacked-out detailing, upgraded headlights, trim-specific wheels and tinted rear glass.
