Winner: the Nissan Leaf
The Nissan Leaf has taken the Car of the Year crown, making it the fifth electric car in a row to claim the title. The judges were impressed by its combination of long range, powerful motors, efficiency and low starting price.

According to Richard Ingram, deputy editor of Auto Express, ““Against every yardstick, Nissan’s Leaf is an outstanding Car of the Year.
“Rivals can’t beat its mix of long range, keen pricing and a powertrain that blends performance and efficiency like few others. Add in a premium ride quality, tight handling plus an interior that offers impressive space wrapped in a dynamic design, and its victory is richly deserved. Engineered and manufactured in Britain, it’s a homegrown triumph to boot.”

The Leaf was one of the first electric cars to go properly mainstream, and the latest one is better than ever. It costs just under £28,000, undercutting the Kia EV3 and Skoda Elroq by a few grand, rising to around £32,000 for the model with a larger battery and a whopping 387 miles of range.
We’ve tested the Leaf, and we were also impressed by the comfy suspension and solid interior. It’s a deserving winner.
