Getting away in the car this summer? Experts have warned to expect higher fuel bills, with petrol and diesel prices rising rapidly and further increases forecast.

Motorists setting off on summer holidays have been warned to brace for rising fuel costs after petrol and diesel prices jumped in just over a week.

Petrol has increased by 2p a litre since hitting a three-month low on 6 July, while diesel has climbed by 2.5p since 9 July, according to the RAC.

The average price of unleaded is now 152.54p per litre, while diesel has reached 167p per litre.

RAC head of policy Simon Williams said the increases are likely to continue as the price of a barrel of oil has surged from the low $70 (around £52) range to the mid-$80s (around £59) in under two weeks.

He said: “Sadly for drivers – many of whom will be about to depart for a much-needed summer break – prices at the pump are on the rise again.”

The RAC’s wholesale fuel analysis suggests petrol could soon return to around 155p per litre, with diesel climbing about 170p per litre. These prices were last seen in June.

So, if you’re filling up a typical 55-litre family car, you’re looking at costs around £83.90 to fill up your tank for unleaded and £91.85 for diesel, according to the RAC.

Quick tips to save money on fuel

Here are some things you can do to save money on fuel:

  • Compare fuel prices before you fill up instead of stopping at the first forecourt.
  • Fill up at supermarkets and independent stations as these are cheaper than motorway services.
  • Keep your tyres properly inflated and remove unnecessary weight from your car to improve its efficiency.
  • Drive smoothly by avoiding harsh acceleration and heavy braking to make each tank go further.
  • Consider buying an EV so you don’t have to worry about fuel prices at all.
