Is the SsangYong Korando a good car?

The outgoing SsangYong Korando was a cheap-and-cheerful SUV that sacrificed a few creature comforts in the name of practicality and affordability. This all-new model tries to strike a better balance to draw you away from the likes of the Nissan Qashqai and Skoda Karoq.

One of the reasons you might choose the SsangYong Korando over more mainstream alternatives is because of the way it looks. All those sharp creases angular edges and contrasting black plastic trims might not be conventionally attractive, but they certainly help the Korando stand out in a crowd.

Inside, the SsangYong Korando doesn’t look radically different from the current crop of family SUVs. You get a touchscreen infotainment system in the middle as well as a few logically organised buttons and knobs.

There’s enough space for tall adults to get comfy in the SsangYong Korando’s back seats and its boot is big enough to accommodate enough luggage for a family weekend away, too.

The new SsangYong Korando looks bolder than ever on the outside, but it sticks to SsangYong’s tried-and-tested formula of being big on practicality, yet small on price

At the opposite end of the Korando, you’ll find a choice of 1.6-litre diesel and 1.5-litre petrol engines, manual or automatic gearboxes, and two- or four-wheel drive – depending on which model you choose.

If you’re planning to use your SsangYong Korando for pulling a trailer or caravan, the most powerful diesel model has an impressive two-tonne towing capacity, but if you spend more time pottering around town, a petrol-powered version will be a better bet.

If long motorway journeys are your thing, you can rest easy knowing that the SsangYong Korando comes with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist to help keep you safe. Additionally, it scored a full five stars in the rigorous 2019 Euro NCAP’s crash test.
