What is the Omoda C5?

The new Omoda C5 is a mid-sized SUV from the Chinese newcomer, and it’ll go on sale in the UK this year year. It’ll be a left-field alternative to cars like the Toyota C-HR and Honda HR-V.

It’s powered by a 1.6-litre petrol engine for now, however an all-electric version will also come along at a later date.

New Omoda C5 design

The new Omoda C5 is approximately the same size as a Toyota C-HR, and the design is almost as bold as that car’s

There’s a wide, imposing grille up front with a diamond pattern flanked with some slim T-shaped headlights. There are also some flashes of red in the lower grille for a more sporty look.

You have a choice of 18 or 19-inch wheels, and there is the option of more red trim on the side skirts and mirrors. There’s also a contrasting black roof with black A-pillars.

The large roof spoiler and fake exhaust surrounds give the rear end a sporty appearance, and there’s a full-width LED light bar with the word Omoda spelled out across the tailgate.

An all-electric version of the C5 will also be available at a later date, and it has a couple of design tweaks over the petrol-powered car. The most notable is the blanked-off front grille, giving a cleaner and more aerodynamic appearance. The lower bumper has also been simplified.

The rear end is pretty much the same, although there are no fake exhaust surrounds in the lower bumper. The Omoda C5 EV looks like a perfect choice for those who want an electric car and don’t want to shout about it.

New Omoda C5 interior and infotainment

The new Omoda C5 has a premium-looking interior with as much tech as you’d expect from a modern SUV.

The standout feature here is the two 10.25-inch screens atop the dashboard, housed in one pane of glass. The central touchscreen has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and you get a digital driver’s display as well.

That central screen also features a 360-degree parking camera, and there’s a wireless charging pad in the centre console. The full-width air vent design is a neat touch as well.

New Omoda C5 engine and driving

The Omoda C5 will be launched in the UK with just one engine option to begin with. It’s a 1.6-litre petrol unit with 195hp and 290Nm of torque, mated to a seven-speed automatic gearbox.

That’s enough power to go from 0-60mph in 7.8 seconds, around 0.4 of a second faster than the 2.0-litre hybrid Toyota C-HR. Omoda has also said that an all-electric version will come at a later date.

New Omoda C5: how much will it cost?

The new Omoda C5 will be available to pre-order from December this year, with the brand officially launching in the UK from February 2024.

UK pricing hasn’t been confirmed yet, however it will be priced to compete with the Toyota C-HR. This means you can expect it to start from around £30,000.
