Car changing is a big deal
Chinese brand Chery is launching a whole family of Tiggo SUVs in the UK. The Tiggo 7 and seven-seat Tiggo 8 have just been launched and these will be joined by the smaller Tiggo 4 and the larger, range-topping Tiggo 9 within the next six months.

OK, so their tops aren’t made of rubber and their bottoms aren’t made of springs, but they are bountiful, because Chinese brand Chery is launching a whole family of Tiggo cars in the UK.
The brand has officially launched with its Tiggo 7 and seven-seat Tiggo 8 SUVs. However the family is growing and these will be joined by the smaller Tiggo 4 and the larger, range-topping Tiggo 9 (below) within the next six months.
Chery, which is derived from the word ‘cheery’ , says its cars combine advanced technology and safety at an accessible price.
Chery Tiggo 8 prices and specs revealed
The Chery Tiggo 8 is a seven-seat SUV designed to be a “new benchmark for family-focused SUVs”, claims Chery. It is available with either a petrol engine or as a plug-in hybrid, with first deliveries starting from 1 September.
There are two trim levels available, Aspire and Summit. All cars get a 15.6-inch central touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, adaptive cruise control, a full synthetic leather interior, and a 540-degree camera.

The 1.6-litre petrol engine produces 147hp, getting the Tiggo 8 from 0-62mph in 9.8 seconds. The Super Hybrid plug-in model is quicker, managing the 0-62mph sprint in 8.5 seconds. It has an official electric-only range of 56 miles and a total range of 745 miles when you take the petrol tank into account. The 18.4 kWh battery can be fast-charged from 30-80% in just 20 minutes.
As a family SUV, practicality is key. The Tiggo 8 has a 5+2 seating layout, and with the rear rows of seats folded down, it has a luggage capacity of 1,930 litres.
Chery Tiggo 7 prices
The five-seat Tiggo 7 starts at £24,995 for the 1.6-litre petrol model, while the Super Hybrid version is priced from £29,995, like the Tiggo 8 it comes in either Aspire or Summit grades.
No price details have been released for the Tiggo 4 (below) or for the 9 but you can expect the smaller SUV to start around £22,000 while the larger one could cost from around £33,000.
Chery plans UK R&D centre and factory
Chery has big plans for the UK, confirming it will open a UK-based research and development hub. This is part of a longer-term strategy that could eventually see the brand build cars in the UK.
Chery UK CEO Gary Lan explained that the brand has a step-by-step approach, starting with cars tailored for UK roads, followed by UK-based engineering, and then potentially production.
“It actually takes us 20 years of preparation to be here because the UK is a mature sophisticated market, with high regulation,” said Lan. “So we took a long time to be here. We want to have a sustainable long-term goal.”
Lan also gave a specific example of why UK engineering is important to the brand.
“Roundabouts are super unique in the UK, compared to many markets around the world. So our vehicle needs to have a good acceleration in the low-speed range to go into the roundabout. That’s the reason why we need to have a UK engineering hub.”
What is Chery and why is it in the UK?
Chery is the parent brand of Omoda and Jaecoo and has been China’s largest vehicle exporter for 22 consecutive years. The brand sees an opportunity in the UK for buyers with families in the £20,000 to £30,000 price bracket.
To support its launch, Chery will initially open with 25 dealerships, with a plan to expand this to 100 sites by 2026. The company has also partnered with DHL for parts distribution to ensure overnight delivery is possible.
For peace of mind, all Chery models will come with a comprehensive seven-year/100,000-mile warranty. The Tiggo 8 Super Hybrid also gets an eight-year/100,000-mile warranty for its battery. Additionally, all cars come with RAC roadside assistance for the first three years.
