Car changing is a big deal
THINK! has launched its first drug driving campaign in a decade, warning young drivers of the deadly risks and legal consequences of getting behind the wheel under the influence.
Thinking of getting behind the wheel drunk or high? Think again, as one mistake can cost you everything.
The government-backed road safety initiative THINK! has launched its first drug driving campaign in a decade, aiming to tackle a growing problem on UK roads. The campaign highlights how one poor choice behind the wheel can have devastating consequences.
With drug-related collisions rising sharply over the past ten years, THINK! is targeting young male drivers, who make up 90% of drug-impaired collisions and nearly half of all cases involve drivers aged 17 to 30. Between 2014 and 2023, fatalities where drugs were present rose by 70%.
The campaign, titled ‘Don’t put drugs in the driving seat’, features a striking video shot entirely from the driver’s perspective. It shows how a single reckless decision can spiral into a collision, an encounter with police, a court appearance, and ultimately jail time.
Local transport minister, Lilian Greenwood, said: “Drug driving destroys lives. THINK! is reminding drivers of the dangers and devastating consequences of driving under the influence as part of our upcoming Road Safety Strategy.”
The campaign will run throughout December across social media – including TikTok – online video, digital audio platforms such as YouTube, and out-of-home advertising in known drug-driving hotspots.

“Drug driving is incredibly dangerous and puts the lives of your passengers, other road users, and yourself at risk,” said chief superintendent Marc Clothier, National Police Chiefs’ Council lead for Operation Limit. “Police officers will continue proactive, intelligence-led stops, especially over the December period. Drivers caught under the influence will be prosecuted.”
THINK!’s survey shows 32% of young men believe it’s acceptable to drive if they feel fine after taking drugs, and 46% know someone who does. The campaign hopes to challenge these risky attitudes before more lives are lost.

Tips to stay safe on the road
Here are some things you could do to keep yourself and others safe on our roads this festive season:
- Don’t drive under the influence: Even if you feel fine, drugs or alcohol can slow your reactions and cloud your judgment.
- Plan ahead: Take public transport, call a taxi, or have a designated driver if you’re drinking or using drugs.
- Know the consequences: Getting caught can mean fines, losing your licence, or even jail.
- Look out for friends: Stop them from driving if they’ve been drinking or using drugs.
- Stay informed: Follow THINK! campaigns and listen to local police advice to stay up to date on road safety.
