Car changing is a big deal
The spacious and practical Skoda Kodiaq is a great example of a family SUV. Mat Watson explains why it’s worth considering, but also highlights a few drawbacks to keep in mind.
The Skoda Kodiaq makes a compelling case as a family SUV, thanks to its clever, spacious interior and huge boot – more than ideal for family getaways and everyday errands.
There’s plenty that I like about it, but there are also a few qualms worth knowing about before you bite the bullet. Here’s what makes it a great family car, and what you should consider before buying one.

Three things I like about the Skoda Kodiaq
1. Loads of space and practicality
There’s a huge amount of room for passengers, with the option of seven seats. Its massive boot of up to 585 litres of space in its five-seater model makes it ideal for family life, holidays and carrying pretty much anything I need.
2. Clever, well-designed interior
The cabin feels well-built, comfortable and thoughtfully designed. I particularly like the clever storage solutions and physical climate controls, which make everyday use much easier.

3. Comfortable on long journeys
It’s a smooth, refined motorway cruiser with good visibility and plenty of comfort. It feels effortless on longer trips, even when fully loaded with passengers and luggage.
Skoda Kodiaq deals
The Skoda Kodiaq typically starts from £39,390 when bought new, but I’ve found a great deal on a used example that’s just three years old and costs almost half as much.
This seven-seat, entry-level SE model from 2023 comes with a 150hp 1.5-litre petrol engine and has covered 29,048 miles. All of this for just £21,899. Equipment includes heated seats, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a wireless phone charger, a reversing camera and parking sensors.
Three things that annoy me about the Skoda Kodiaq
1. Not particularly exciting to drive

Despite being a capable and comfortable SUV, it feels quite uninspiring behind the wheel. It also lacks the sharper handling and engaging driving experience offered by some alternatives.
2. The third row is cramped
Although seven seats are useful to have, the back two are better suited to children than adults. They’re also not particularly comfortable for longer journeys.
3. Expensive extras and options

The starting price is already fairly high when new, and adding desirable features can quickly push the cost up. Some equipment, such as adaptive cruise control and a surround-view camera, costs extra.
It’s a real bonus that there are plenty of used examples on the market, like the one above, giving you the chance to snap up a well-equipped model at a bargain price.
