Skoda has simplified the vRS engine line-up, so these days there’s just one – the 265hp 2.0 TSI. Your choice is whether to go for the hatch or the estate.

I’d take the estate all day long, preferably in a subtle colour to underplay the Skoda’s performance. The list price is £41,715 but you can reduce that to just £35,437 if you buy through Carwow.

Why consider an Octavia vRS Estate?

If you compare the vRS with hot hatches, there are alternatives with more power and sharper handling. I think that misses the point, though. Choose a super-rapid hot hatch instead and it won’t have a 640-litre boot or legroom to spare for lanky teenagers in the back.

The Skoda is quick but it’s comfortable too. It’s a road car for everyday driving, not an OTT rocket with a rock-hard ride.
