This is the all-new KGM Torres, and it’s the first model to come from the brand formerly known as Ssangyong since it changed its name. This rugged-looking SUV provides an alternative to something like a Kia Sportage, and it starts from £34,995.

The Torres is only available with a 1.5-litre petrol engine for now, however an all-electric version is coming this summer for those who may be considering something like a Skoda Enyaq.

New KGM Torres price and specs

The new KGM Torres is available to order now, with prices starting from £34,995. That makes it around £5,000 more expensive than a Kia Sportage, and it’s around the same as a Volkswagen Tiguan. The Torres does offer a much larger boot than these cars, but more on that later.

There are two trim levels to choose from: K30 and K40. The basic K30 model comes with plenty of kit as standard with LED headlights, front and rear parking sensors, heated seats, a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display and a 12.3-inch infotainment system. All cars also get 18-inch alloy wheels.

You’ll have to spend £37,995 if you want the K40 model, or you can have this version with all-wheel drive for £39,995 from August. Your extra cash gets you a heated steering wheel, a power tailgate, 20-inch alloy wheels and heated rear seats.

New KGM Torres design

If you were to take a quick glance at the new KGM Torres, you’d be forgiven for thinking it was a Jeep or even a GMC Hummer EV. It has a similar rugged-looking design to those cars, especially up front.

The grille is very blunt and square, with some sleek headlights giving it a modern look. The lower bumper is also sporting chunky lower trims to make it look even more tough. You get 18-inch alloy wheels as standard, rising to 20-inch rims on range-topping models.

The boxy theme continues down the side, where the silhouette looks pretty similar to the Kia Sorento’s. The squared-off wheel arches also ape the ones found on the Hummer EV. Things get a bit quirky at the rear. The Torres has a strange hump in the tailgate which looks as though it mimics a spare wheel, and there’s a chunky handle to lift the boot lid as well.

New KGM Torres interior and infotainment

The KGM Torres is meant to fill the gap between something like a Kia Sportage and a Kia Sorento in terms of size, and it’s the boot which sets this car apart from some alternatives.

You have 705 litres of space back there with the seats up, which is over 50 litres more than the similarly-priced Volkswagen Tiguan. It is around 15 litres down on a Skoda Kodiaq, but that car is more expensive.

You have a pretty modern-looking dashboard up front, with two 10.25-inch displays taking pride of place. You get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard, as well as DAB radio. Built-in sat nav is reserved for top-spec cars, however this isn’t much of an issue when you can pair your phone.

New KGM Torres engines

From launch there’s just one engine to choose from in the KGM Torres. It comes with a 1.5-litre petrol unit, paired to a six-speed automatic gearbox and putting out 163hp. All cars are front-wheel drive for now, however an all-wheel drive option will follow in the summer.

Also coming soon is the Torres EVX, an all-electric version to provide an alternative to something like a Skoda Enyaq. This will get 287 miles of range, around 40 miles more than the entry-level Enyaq and it’s almost 30 miles more than the BYD Atto 3 can manage. More details of this electric SUV will follow when it launches in April this year.
