The Audi S5 rivals quick coupes such as the Mercedes-AMG C43 Coupe, BMW 440i and, in terms of performance at least, the Ford Mustang. The standard S5 is a two-door coupe, while the S5 Sportback gets rear doors and a slightly bigger boot.

To mark the S5 out of any old A5 gets a more aggressive bodykit, unique 18-inch alloy wheels, and four beefy exhaust pipes. Inside, there’s a flat-bottomed steering wheel, leather-Alcantara sports seats, and the choice of carbon fibre or aluminium trim.

This wouldn’t be an S model if it didn’t have a performance engine hidden under its bonnet. Its 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 produces 349hp which propels it from 0-62mph in 4.7 seconds – a whole two-tenths quicker than the old S5. Thank god for that! However, the S5 is more about pace than offering the fun behind the wheel a BMW 4 Series can hand out.

Weighing 60kgs less than its predecessor means fuel economy is up and Audi confidently reckons you can average 38mpg out of it on a run, though 30mpg seems more realistic.

The S5 shares a platform with, believe it or not, the hulking great Q7 SUV and as a result has more passenger space than the previous model and a big, practical boot.

It comes as standard with one of the best infotainment systems currently available along with necessities such as climate and cruise control. Much of the clever tech that makes it more competent to drive – such as the active steering and clever rear differential – are costly options.
